Rhiannon Potkey is the new BYU beat writer for the SL Tribune replacing Patrick Kinahan. To tell the truth, from reading her initial articles and especially her blog at the Trib, she is a major improvement over Kinahan. Her new BYU blog is much more in-depth and she seems to be much less cynical in her reporting. Looks like she spent a few years writing at scout.com and her last job prior to SLC was at the Ventura County Star in So Cal. I'll be making her blog a regular stop on the daily quest for BYU updates.

I'm curious what others think of the new writer compared with Kinahan...

I'm a big PK fan. I was sad to see him leave the trib. I'm glad he's still on the radio.

How this new writeer will work out . . . we'll see.

It worries me that she spells football wrong in her blog though (it's only futball in germany, and even then it has an unglout over the U and it's a completely different sport)

I loved PK cause he was as straight of a shooter as you can find. He wouldn't try to sugar coat problems we were facing, but when he said something was gonna be good it would be. He also really respected Bronco and the program that he was establishing.

Call me sexist but i think that it is weird having a girl beat writer.

I'm not sure how I feel about a female blogger either...however, she certainly has put more information out there and more often than PK ever did. My question ultimately is, does she get it? Does she get sports from a guys perspective, from my perspective? Does she have IT? Time will tell if what she writes resonates in us, in me. For the time being, I am giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Agreed on both points. Call me sexist too. She will have to work harder to bring better info than PK ever did--and that just to get respect from the BYU fanatics. But anyone reading her blog will find she's already on her way.

Couple things I noticed:

1. she reports on things like a BYU homer (she chose to point out that BYU topped the conference in academic performance--as if this were a competition), but she doesn't sound like Dick Vitale talking, so the information comes off strong.

2. The info is rather comprehensive. Moreso than any similar source I've seen. I like that.

Problem to ponder:

Will BYU have issues with her being in the locker room postgame?

When I first read the title of Rhiannon Portkey I thought it was some odd combination of Fleetwood Mac and Harry Potter.
