I was at the game, and for what it's worth to some of you Cougs, here's my thoughts.
TCU was probably the toughest D we've faced yet. The game was kind of a slow going game because it seemed to me to be a defense controlled game. Thoughts:
- Utahs Defense was good to great. I would say only 10 of the 20 points were actually given up by the defense. They got that one punt block/return, plus one field goal that wasn't really their fault. They did great at containing Brown. That guy is a stud and whenever he would turn the corner, you might as well just start moving the chains. TCU's run game was very physical, and Utah contained it pretty decent.
-TCU's defense did great all around. I don't think Mack got a run that had more then 7 yards to it. Mack was getting a few yards, but not first downs (but hey, it ate up the clock, which is what we wanted). TCU also had great coverage, and they benefited greatly from 2 bad passes from Brian.
-Utah Special Teams did poor (I think that's the first time this year I've said that). That blocked punt/return for TD energized the TCU team. Had that not happened, they wouldn't have gotten as pumped as they were to come back. Also, our guys couldn't stop the punt/kick off returns for crap. The only time I saw that they started on the 20 was when they downed it in the endzone. Anytime TCU ran it back, they started at around the 40. That is what kept TCU in the game.
-Utah offense did enough to win. Brian's shoulder is still hurting him, and you can tell when he throws passes over 15 yards. He made some bad decisions in the pocket as well. What I liked though, was the leadership that was there with him. They kept playing, and gritted it out to the end for a win. Some Utes are upset that we didn't win with Urban era numbers, but I don't care about that. We are a young team and you can tell this because most of our play makers are freshmen and sophmores. We've got young guys taking over because of injuries, and they are slowly getting the hang of it. Brian Johnson makes the difference in this offense. Without him, they do not exist.
It was a great game to watch. Most the TCU fans I met were gracious and good fans.
