McEuen the Backup? 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Just a question after reading a few articles lately, but does Kurt McEuen have a legitimate chance at becoming the backup QB over Gaskins?

On Tuesday, the Deseret News quoted Brandon Doman as saying, "Kurt has been in the program for two years and he has really done a good job this spring; I've been really happy with him. He'll be a real good third quarterback and someone to pressure Brenden for the backup job."

Then today on byucougars.com[/url] there was a report that said "For the second day in a row, the defense held Kurt McEuen and the second team offense," and "Brenden Gaskins led the final set, but it ended on an early third-and-out."

Does the fact that McEuen has quarterbacked the second team offense while Gaskins has been doing final sets for a few days in a row mean anything? Or are they just trying to get McEuen more reps with the second team? Toughts from anyone in the know?

Its Gaskins job to lose. But stranger things have happened. After what Gaskins did in the Spring game last year, and he did decent in limited time last year, he's got the job in hand.

I talked to McEuen's dad just the other day. This is from his dad so take this information for what it is worth. He mentioned that Gaskins has a problem looking up field. He is always dumping off to his safety valve which makes defending Gaskins very easy. I wasn't sure if I should beleive him or not but I started paying better attention to his stats this spring. Gaskins is only averaging about 5-7 yards a completion. I realize there are many reasons why this is happening. O-line, playing against 1st team D, play calling, ect... Kurts has a very strong arm and his first read is deep. Whether that is good or bad I'm not sure but Doman seems to be pretty high on Kurt.

If you think about it, making Kurt the backup makes sense. He is a soph and Gaskins is a junior. Hall will obviously be the starter for the next two years leaving Kurt's senior year to start and giving time to Munns and Lark to learn the offense better and be better prepared for the next season. Doman mentioned in the d-news today how he prefers QBs to have three years in the program before starting.

Since I coached Kurt in high school I'm very much in his corner and hope he will emerge as the back-up. That being said I know Bronco and Doman will do the very best for the team and if that means Kurt is 3rd string then he didn't do enough to earn the back-up role. I would like to get Cruiser's opinion on this subject or anyone who has been at practice and can give an unbiased report on how the fight for 2nd string is really going.

I'm glad to see Kurt doing well. After reading the Trib and a article on Scout.com my friend with a subscription showed me, it's looking like Kurt has a real shot at being no. 2. If both QBs are close to equal it make sense to move Kurt up so he can be better prepared when Max is done. I wonder if future plans are factoring into Broncos and Domans decision.
