Hooks Knee Injury - this years Diluigi award? 5 Months ago Karma: 6
On a non-contact day with the grass! I guess this may be our 'Diluigi Award' winner for this year. I decided that in honor of JJ's paper injury last year, we should at least give him the respect of starting an award for non-contact injuries in his name.
Hopefully this injury is not serious like they think it is. It was my understanding that Hooks was going to be huge in run support. The guy is having is fair of challenges, that's for sure!

From RP's Blog on the SL Trib:

Hooks Suffers Knee Injury
Despite the best efforts to prevent it, the BYU football program suffered a significant injury today at practice.

Linebacker Terrance Hooks came down after intercepting a pass and grabbed at his left knee while crying out in pain.

As the team conducted its Thursday's Heroes ceremony after practice, coaches Paul Tidwell, Barry Lamb, Robert Anae and Jaime Hill gathered around Hooks while the trainers checked his leg.

Hooks was eventually carted off with an inflatable caste around the leg and taken for X-rays.

"Doesn't look good," BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "From the preliminary, it looks like probably a patella tendon. He is getting X-rays now. It's premature to say that is what it is, but it doesn't look positive at this point.

Mendenhall has talked all spring about trying to take it easy in hopes of not suffering any more attrition to the ranks.

"Non-contact injury on the grass on a non-contact day," he said. "It saddens me beyond what I could even tell you and frustration is even stronger than that. I just don't know what to say."

The team honored Dick Jardine as its Thursday's Hero, and former BYU coach LaVell Edwards came down to greet his former player.

- Max Hall finished 10 for 10 for 85 yards and one touchdown during team drills. Austin Collie finished with 32 receiving yards and a touchdown while Wayne Latu ran in a short score.

I hate this kind of news.......
better than an ACL, worse than an MCL.....to gve you a basic idea

I don't know what the specific diagnosis and prognosis for Hooks is, but Andrew Bynum of the Lakers suffered a "subluxation" (aka dislocation of joint) and has been out minimum 8 weeks but will play. Obviously this is less severe than a tear, but you're still talking about 3-4 months rehab at bare minimum; I'd guess a year absolute max.

This type of injury (assuming it's a complete tear) is likely to cost Hooks the remainder of the summer and then some. It's usually about a six month recuperation. Safe to say that Hooks won't be on the field next season; but it's not a career ender typically (Alonzo Mourning retired from one, but he was already at the end of his rope).

He already redshirted, but it's possible to keep the eligibility.

Certainly not good news. Keep your head up Terrance......

bummer, no matter how hard you try you can't prevent injuries in football 100% of the time. That's really too bad, I think hooks has already used a rs year.

Yeah, that's brutal. Hooks has been looking really good, too. At least there is an upside-- this happened in spring ball. Hopefully this won't set him back too much and he can be a contributor on the field this fall.

if it's serious (and it probably is, if you tear one of your patellar tendons it's fairly obvious--according to my wife who knows about that stuff--and from what the coaches said it sounds like it was fairly obvious to them that that was the problem. I doubt he plays this fall.

Someone at the State of the State with Bronco today asked about this injury. Bronco said it was season ending (6-8 months recovery). That is a big hit on our LBs, but hopefully Hooks will be back.
