I talked to McEuen's dad just the other day. This is from his dad so take this information for what it is worth. He mentioned that Gaskins has a problem looking up field. He is always dumping off to his safety valve which makes defending Gaskins very easy. I wasn't sure if I should beleive him or not but I started paying better attention to his stats this spring. Gaskins is only averaging about 5-7 yards a completion. I realize there are many reasons why this is happening. O-line, playing against 1st team D, play calling, ect... Kurts has a very strong arm and his first read is deep. Whether that is good or bad I'm not sure but Doman seems to be pretty high on Kurt.

If you think about it, making Kurt the backup makes sense. He is a soph and Gaskins is a junior. Hall will obviously be the starter for the next two years leaving Kurt's senior year to start and giving time to Munns and Lark to learn the offense better and be better prepared for the next season. Doman mentioned in the d-news today how he prefers QBs to have three years in the program before starting.

Since I coached Kurt in high school I'm very much in his corner and hope he will emerge as the back-up. That being said I know Bronco and Doman will do the very best for the team and if that means Kurt is 3rd string then he didn't do enough to earn the back-up role. I would like to get Cruiser's opinion on this subject or anyone who has been at practice and can give an unbiased report on how the fight for 2nd string is really going.
My brother played ball with Kurt in High School. There were a lot of times where Kurt hooked up with my brother on passes. That would mean you were also my brothers coach. I am not in Utah so I have not kept up with what coaches are where now. The most I have heard of any coach is that Coach Tree had passed away. Who are you?

Having been to many (if not most) of the practices this spring, I will say that McEuen has outplayed Gaskins day in and day out. He should be the #2 IMO. I have not seen McEuen's two interceptions but have seen many of Gaskins. McEuen looks completely comfortable back there and moreso everyday. In the only contact scrimmage, he moved the ball down the field better than anyone (including Max) and would have had a TD but a ball thrown after scrambling was dropped. Gaskins was intercepted once and an incompletion in, maybe, 3 snaps. Not good!! The competition I think is getting to him.

Go Cougs!!!!

What about those below Gaskins and McEuen? Has Munns been getting any snaps?

The only one below Gaskins and McEuen is Covey, I believe. I also think Munns is either on a mission, or is planning one very soon.

Does anyone know if Unga or Vakapuna can throw the ball?

I'm kind of excited about covey. If he can develop as a passer it would be fun to have a qb with some wheels down at the Y again (steve young was the fun-nest qb to watch in BYU history)

Covey is #4. Munns is at practices but is still not close to 100% because of his ACL tear last fall. He is leaving on a mission this summer.

As far as Covey, I can't help but think his days as a running are limited. He is a head shorter than all the others and can't weigh 170 lbs. I think he will be roadkill after a couple of runs or pitches off the option. Maybe he was recruited as a DB (not Q for a reason. Not sure why the change but his QB potential seems very limited to me.

Gaskins continues to average 1-2 picks a practice. I know he had at least one on Friday. And for the umpteenth time, these are all 3-7 yard throws. (trying to make a buzzer sound here) *&^*(&^% time's up move on with McEuen.

Go Cougs!!!
