Todd Marinovich wanted BYU 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I was looking at the SI vault and noticed this article about Marinovich. It caught my eye only because I wrote a paper in undergrad about his father's unethical tactics for training his young son. I was shocked to find at the end of the article a part that talked about his recruiting trail. I thought it would be all the big time colleges like usual...but, there I found this:

BYU. It was a big early favorite. Marinovich loved the Cougars' quarterback tradition embodied by Gifford Nielsen, Jim McMahon and Steve Young. Todd did have some misgivings about the quality of play in the WAC, but BYU blew it when coach LaVell Edwards failed to visit Mission Viejo. That gaffe left the impression that BYU simply didn't care enough to send its very best.

Via Wikipedia, here are some of the unethical practices of Todd's father:

The claims also included strict workout regimens during his early years and complete abstinence from fast food. While Marinovich's mother was pregnant with Todd, her diet was also under close scrutiny, she was to eat only lean meals high in protein and her husband forced her to give up cigarette smoking, although she admits to having "to sneak into the garage for an occasional puff." After Todd's birth, his father tied his right hand behind his back, forcing the youngster to become left-handed. In 1987, Marinovich racked up a national record 9,194 passing yards at Capistrano Valley High. He was awarded the Dial Award for the national high school scholar-athlete of the year in 1987

Todd was also refered to as "Robo QB" when coming out of college and following a disappointing pro career where he was busted for drug use, called "Todd Marijuanavich"

I somehow don't think he would have made it at BYU with it's honor code.

"All I saw was purple." - Todd Marinovich after the shellacking he and his USC teammates went through at Husky Stadium in 1990.

Good memories (sure helps these days to have some!).

I remember reading an SI article about him when I was in high school, but I don't know if it was that one or not. I do remember that the article mentioned BYU was one his favorites, so maybe this was the one.

Wow! If that's unethical, then what are ethics?
