Being sort of a geek about sports logos and uniforms, I must say that I don't mind the tan as long as it is only an accent color (even if only on the logos) and not the primary color of any uniform or article of clothing (as it is on that hat). BYU has a great logo set and a part of me wishes that the "oval Y" would actually be de-emphasized a little because the other logos are so great.
Back in the 80s and early 90s, the oval Y was only found on the football helmets--all the fan apparel as well as other sports teams used a mish-mash of logos: the BYU with the cougar crawling on it, a Y with a cougar crawling down it, a growling cougar head, a abstract-line drawing cougar head, a cougar with a sailor hat, and, most prominatly, various versions of the block Y. Part of the 1999 identity redesign was to make the create a sort of uniformity both in the use of logos and the use of colors (before, each team seemed to use a different shade of blue). I think SME Design did a great job with the logos, but Nike ruined it with the terrible uniform design.
Don't get me wrong, I love BYU's current football and basketball uniforms. I'd just like to see a little less oval Y logo everywhere and more of the other logos--particularly the more block Y (or the new equivalent thereof).
