How about not recruiting enough linemen because he had won w/o linemen before? The only thing GC proved in 01 is that if he had enough great offensive players, he could barely get by as a HC who didn't care about defense. To Crowton (from my perspective) it seemed that defense was just some trivial detail that got in the way of more important matters.

I don't know if you remember, but a condition of Crowton becoming head coach at BYU was that he keep all the staff. So he had to keep Ken Schmidt to run the defense the first year. That defense put 4 players in the NFL in spite of how bad it played. Crowton also hired Mendenhall and the defense turned it around the next season. Unfortunately, the cupboard was bare for Crowton on offense after that.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad we have Mendenhall and Crowton is gone, but don't lay all the blame on Crowton for things that were out of his control. He did make OSU's defense look silly in the BCS title game this year. He knows how to coach, just not be a head coach.

He knows talent too. The issue is how to get that talent to either perform (he managed to do so in 2001) or stay out of trouble. We'll never know how that crop of players would have done had they stayed away from innapropriate things and of course, the wrong girls. (Kobe Bryant anyone?)

He might have inherited an experienced team when he took over (Doman, Staley, etc.) but the cupboard was really bare behind them. I'm related to Lavell but i still have to admit that after the Luke Staley class, we had a run of some real stinker classes (stinker due to their production when they got here, not the national rankings when they signed) and (I mention this in another post) a lot of wasted scholarships on guys that never contributed.

What Bronco has managed to do, is to right the ship and avoid the type of waste that had occurred for the last ten years at the Y. Scholarships aren't wasted with Bronco (in fact guys without scholarships are even contributing big time); and we have depth for the 1st time in recent memory.

(Draw up a depth chart for the next 5-8 years and you'll pinch yourself how well Bronco and his staff have done)
literally you can pencil guys in for a long time from now that we know are going to star. (Adam Timo, Bronson Kaufusi, Craig Bills, etc. etc. etc. I fully expect Jake Heaps to be the next superstar BYU QB too)

terrific family man and offensive genius (apparently...which i say because i hate 2 qb systems-they flat out don't work...even at Oregon, sorry its true. Great playbook though...

The point: Get out of Provo and never come back, cant you feel a dirty taste crowton? Or did BcS money clean it up nicely? Your welcome to your hometown by any means (orem) but stay out of Cougartown unless your coming to play the Mighty Cougars

After attending my graduation commencement yesterday I went out to eat with my family at a local restaurant. In the middle of my meal I was suprised to see none other than Gary Crowton walk in and sit at the table adjacent to mine. I couldn't help but wonder what brought him to Provo (recruiting, family, football, vacation, etc).

He was sitting with two other men who were farely large and also seemed to have ties with football.

He was also sporting his 2007 LSU National Championship hat. The hat had "national champion" and "BCS" labeled all over it. (Rubbing it in to BYU fans or a recruiting messsage perhaps?)

Note: I like GC as a person, and as an OC. He just wasn't the best of head coaches. I'm glad he has found success at LSU

Maybe he was there to get some tips on how to run an offseason program?

That and wanting to win by nine rather than two.

Honestly, taking that statement all alone by itself, who WOULDN'T rather win by 9 than just by 2?

Answer: Nobody

Heck at the half in our bowl game I was worried that our OC would rather win by 3 than by 10. Kinda goes both ways when you think about it...

CUT AND DRY: Crowton in 2001 inherited most of Levells Seniors/best players.
The last couple years BYU did not have steller recruiting classes under lavell. Berry was a highly touted QB, but never turned out to be great, then who else??????? Bronco's first two years of W's came 99.9% from Gary Crowtons Recruits. Beck, Harline, Brown, Coats, Collie -
Crowton IS NOT as good as fit at Byu as BRONCO is, but lets not forget that Gary had a very empty cubbord after 2001. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
Who know if Lavell had some great classes in 99-00 then maybe we wouldn't have been so bad? Maybe Gary would still be here??
If we were 11-2 and fresh off a bowl victory I would bet that the rape scandel would have NOT lost Gary his job. It was the combination of bad PR and Losses.
