Scout Recruit rankings updated. 2 Months ago Karma: 18
Scout has updated the recruiting rankings, and several potential future Cougs are now four-star recruits. Kyle Van Noy and Stan Hasiak were bumped from 3 to 4 stars. Steven Fanua, Taysom Hill, and Brett Thompson went from unevaluated to 4 stars. L.T. Filiage, Tui Chriton, Latu Heimuli, and Jray Galeai went from unevaluated to 3 stars. Looks like a bumper crop of LDS football talent this year, hope Bronco has his harvester warmed up!!!

If BYU can pick up some of these commits, this might by the highest ranking (star-wise) BYU has had in a long time, if not ever.

This only means that they will be looked at more heavily by the $$$ conferences.

Here's hoping we land some if not all.

What I think is interesting is that according to Scout, BYU has offered 15 athletes. From what I have heard, BYU has about 15 scholarships to give. Only one of the 15 BYU has offered is ranked less than 3 stars, and that is the already verbally committed Nick Aletto, with 1 star. Aletto should at least have 2 stars eventually, once he gets evaluated.

If you read some of Alleto's areticles, some of the writers think he could be a really good center. Probably not a 4 or 5 star guy obviously but a solid guy who could be really good after a two or three years in the sytem.

I'm also guessing he's going to be one of these guys who hasn't been evaluated extensively but since he committed to BYU and is not a huge prospect drawing interest from other schools, they'll just give him a 2 star ranking and not bother following him anymore.

alleto is a highly regarded center, though it seems that no center is going to get much in the way of stars. look at the scout 300 center listing:

http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=4&pid=9&yr=2009

there are only 4 rated centers. 1 4-star, 3 3 stars. alleto is listed at 5, though who knows what they means since he is nr (not rated). it surprises me that centers don't carry the weight of other o-line positions. you always hear that they are the "qb" of the line, and make the blocking calls.

regarding the number of offers versus the available spots, it is hard to tell how many offers byu can make, since more and more are graduating hs and leaving on missions. iirc in the -08 class 5 will be leaving on missions so they won't count until the -10 class. i'm just glad i don't have to keep track of it.

this much i do know, the -09 class is stocked with top shelf lds athletes, and byu is sitting on a short-stack of schollies. that's unfortunate.
