The Stewart Mandel Top 25 Ranking Timeline 2 Months ago Karma: -8

Pre-Bowls 2007, after the Cougars beat Utah, he had BYU ranked #24 (AP Poll). The lowest voters had us ranked 25th.

Post-Bowls 2007, after the Cougars beat UCLA, he had BYU ranked #25 (AP Poll). The lowest voters had us unranked. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/stewart_mandel/01/08/power.rankings/2.html http://pollspeak.com/pollstalker/pollstalker.php?r=T&s=1&p=1&w=16&t1=16&t2=0&v=0

Stewart Mandel defended his hypocritical final ranking: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/stewart_mandel/01/14/mailbag/3.html
OK, I'm a biased BYU graduate, but come on! Ranking the team with the longest winning streak in the country, who definitely did not play a patsy schedule, 25th? --Thad LeVar, Tooele, Utah
"The way I looked at it, the Cougars didn't play a top-25 team all season. In their bowl game, they needed a blocked field goal to survive a 6-6 UCLA team (which they lost to previously). Much like Hawaii, they never offered any discernible proof that they're one of the 25 best teams in the country, but I gave them a token nod for winning 11 games."

Pre-Spring 2008, he had BYU ranked #18. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/stewart_mandel/01/16/power.rankings/1.html
BYU Cougars (11-2)
Who's back: QB Max Hall, RB Harvey Unga, WR Austin Collie, LB Jan Jorgensen.
Who's not: LBs Kelly Poppinga and Bryan Kehl, DB Corby Hodgkiss.
Skinny: "The Cougars won 11 games in spite of an extremely young offense, one that figures to be even more dangerous in '08. Jorgensen recorded 14 sacks as a sophomore."

Post-Spring 2008, he has BYU ranked #17 (passing Virginia Tech, who lost a bunch of RBs).
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/stewart_mandel/05/01/spring.rankings/index.html?eref=T1
Brigham Young Cougars (11-2)
Returning starters: 13 (Offense: 10 Defense: 3)
Key returnees: QB Max Hall, RB Harvey Unga, WR Austin Collie, LB Jan Jorgensen.
Spring star: LB Matt Bauman. The junior asserted himself as the new leader of a linebacking corps that lost standout Kelly Popinga and Bryan Kehl.
Spring recap: "The Cougars' already potent offense discovered new weapons in freshmen RB J.J. DiLuigi and WR Spencer Hafoka. A seemingly depleted defense came together quickly thanks to several transfers and returning missionaries."

Maybe stupidity just takes a while to come around.

Maybe the newswriters are stealing a page from the coaches book and having someone enter their rankings for them. Who was that schlub anyway that had no idea where he ranked a team in the coaches poll?

No, but coming in at a close second, TWil does. Yep, in case anyone forgot, our revered Washington Head Coach left BYU unranked at the end of the season. Moron. Oh well, his loss to BYU will be the first of another mediocre season that gets him fired, just like in '04 with Notre Dame. Nice to know BYU is the one that always gets the ball rolling for him (Actually, that's giving him too much credit. I'm betting Oregon kicks the crap out of Washington in their first game).
