Recruits for next year? 2 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
It seemed that last year at about this time, maybe even later in the summer, that every day I would read the paper or check CB there would be another recruit giving a verbal to BYU. However, it doesn't seem as though we have had as many recruits signing. Is that because we don't have as many scholarships and so they are being held out to higher profile recruits (re: T'eo, who is recieving heavy recruiting from Notre Dame). I know of a few players who have given commitments, but are there others coming and who has given a verbal at this point?

There are basically 10 scholarships left for 08 and we've given offers to 6 guys that we really want. Assuming that only 1 or 2 choose us, that gives us a likely 8 left for all the other kids we'd be recruiting if this were a normal year.

Actually, at this time last year BYU only had 4 commits for 2008. Whereas, BYU has 5 right now for 2009. So we are actually ahead of pace. The difference is that a few commits for 2009 committed WAY early, so it seems different because the news of people committing is more spread apart. However, although we are ahead of pace, I think that will change. First, because there are less scholarships to give out this year. Two, because the offers right now are to highly touted players that we have a pretty legit chance of getting. I don't think many of them are going to commit early with all of the attention they are getting from big schools. Therefore, the commits will come in slower from here on out. Hopefully, BYU holding out for the highley touted players doesn't dissuade other recruits that could have signed because they weren't offered as early or receive as much attention.

Great, we have 10 scholarships available to dish out while teams like USC have 35. That really helps in recruiting.

How does that happen? How many seniors with scholarships are graduating next year?

No school in the NCAA can give out more than 25 scholarships. Some programs actually offer more kids than they legally can just becuase they know some of them won't qualify academically.

Is that like the airlines overbooking a flight?
