BYU's Road Woe's to continue in 2008? 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
BYU has been poor at best in true road games out of conference in their football history. Over the past 25 years they have gone 14-27 in true road games, and I have posted the results below. If you take out Utah State, we are only 10-26. Over that same time period they are 5-20 agaist teams with winning records at the end of the season.

For those of you who think that Washington is not going to be a tough game, better think again. I really hope we can reverse this trend and I think we will this year. What is everyone else's thoughts on this?

We will reverse this trend starting with Washington. Yes, it'll be a tough game, but here are a couple of things to note:

1) We haven't had the confidence to win on the road OOC yet. Even with back-to-back 11-2 seasons. That's because of:
2) The dark years following the 1st year of Crowton.
3) For MANY of those years we had poor quality QBs other than Doman and Sarkissian.
4) We didn't adjust well to the closing down of Rick's College Athletic program.
5) Many of those teams were pretty decent despite "average" records.
6) OOC games are generally played at the beginning of the season against tougher opponents when it takes a while for the offense to gel.

I'm not trying to make excuses here, but there are some reasons as to the poor OOC play over the last several years.

Again, I believe our string of 10 years (?) of OOC losses will END with Washington. I am confident we will go 4-0 in OOC this year - a first in a LONG time that we've done that, including against some good "name-brand" opponents.

Frankly I think the program is better than it has been in years past. So I expect better things. Of course UW will be tough at home.

We have had a little more moxee the last two years. I expect it to continue and grow.

I don't think the rise in expectations is groundless, and history, while instructive, has very little to do with this program this year, especially the expanded history you quote. Many things have changed (and improved) over the last 20 years.

I think we can learn a lot from history. In the Bronco Mendenhall era, BYU is 0-5 in out of conference road games. Having said that, I believe this will be by far the most confident team and best coached team he has had, so I fully expect them to reverse the trend.

By the way, if any of you are wondering where I got this information, here is the web site:

Based on the two team, we are favored to beat Washington.

Based on history and sports psychology, we are favored to lose to them.

This is true. But it is also true that Bronco is not one to have negative streaks because he cares so much about learning from mistakes. The streak will end in Seattle.
