The following post wast cut and pasted from a Husky fansite http://64.226.228.21/board/messages/1/533.html?1213391270
(and not a very good one). It's a bit of a flame, but do you see any merit to the poster's claims?

As a husky fan, it's time I chime in on this subject. I grew up on Yarrow Point in Bellevue, and often took our small runabout across the lake to the big games! (1967-1980)
BYU is an interesting subject. Sorry, it IS relevant to discuss the LDS religion and theology. I choose to do it with respect. I have NO axe to grind, no score to settle. Truth is what motivates me; and the LDS faith and BYU are topics I know something about. I was raised Mormon and was a bishop and high counselor quite a few years ago. I left the faith after extensive study & investigation.
BYU football has an excellent tradition since 1975, enjoying much success. I was a student there in the mid 70's. For Husky fans, you need to know that the BYU football program is a showpiece. It's the "glamour advertisement" for the LDS faith in it's attempt to be accepted as mainstream. I emphasize this point: Mormonism desperately desires to be seen as a mainstream faith in the U.S. and the success of BYU sports is a flagship of this. So is Mitt Romney, the Osmonds, and others.
But there is a big problem. LDS theology is NOT mainstream. Again, I say this cautiously and do not criticize any individuals. But the Mormon SYSTEM is faulty. You see, our Mormon friends have a God they call "Heavenly Father". But, He has not always been God. He used to be a man! He has parents, grandparents, wives, and literal children. They call it "eternal progression". And Mormon men can become a God themselves. This is known as "exaltation". In fact, the goal of Mormonism is not simply salvation, but exaltation. Theologically, this kind of doctrine is closer to Hinduism, not Christianity. Mormons are Christians only in a moral sense; but the theology is NOT Christian. Biblical Christians embrace a completely different God; one who has ALWAYS existed as God, and is infinite. He has no parents or wives, or a body of flesh and bones.
There literally hundreds of issues including racism, polygamy, false prophets, masonry, secret temple ceremonies, changed scripture, blind obedience, dark skin being a sign of God's displeasure, American Indians being Lamanites, Mark Hofmann, etc. Honestly, an OBJECTIVE student of Mormonism easily uncovers the fraudulent nature of it's scripture, theology, and practices.
So there IS a perspective, a fundamental baseline, that BYU football wants to win it's games VERY BADLY. They are playing for much more than sport. It's a God thing (their God) and they earnestly desire the bust the BCS and play with the big boys. The true validation of their football program is, in a sense, a validation of their faith.
Let's go, Huskies, smash the Cougars in September and dispatch them back to Provo and dash their BCS hopes....
I think the poster has some unresolved anger issues.

LOL.... It's funny how some people try manipulate things into something they really arent. I am not a mormon and have no desire to ever be. But you will never see me trying to bash the faith. I respect the LDS faith and for what it does for the people that believe in it.
Think those Huskie fans are doing a great job making this guy feel like an idoit!

This guy is anti all the way and was never a Bishop and never attended BYU. He may have been "raised Mormon" at an early age, but that's about it (and I doubt that, as well).

I'm just glad to know the guy doesn't have an 'axe' to grind. Think of what a diatribe it would be if he did!
Seriously, he brings up Hoffman? Come on!
At any rate, thanks for digging deep to pull up something interesting in these horrible football-less cruiser-less doldrums. There's some Karma for you. (Y'know, he may be onto that Hindu thing; I mean, hey, the BYU fan board gives out --gasp-- KARMA! )

I wonder if that guy has a similar take on Notre Dame's football team's "glamorizing" influence for the Roman Catholic faith. And by the same logic, SMU's off-field performance in the 1980s, and its on-field performance since then, sure don't bode well for the Methodists...
I think most Cougar fans would just like to see their team win, but when crackpots like that dude want to make an issue out of BYU's sponsoring religion, then it does make beating them on their own field extra sweet.
