Good post imuakahuku. Isn't it interesting that Phil calls BYU's winning plays "desperation passes," but not ute come-from-behind plays with less than two minutes left. Phil also doesn't seem to understand that the home field is not an advantage in this rivalry, and that The Utes play "up" while BYU plays "down" in these matchups. He makes the assumption that BYU was simply lucky against The Utes for two consecutive games. He makes a point about The Utes having the total yardage lead in game '06 and sites the tally before BYU adds 75 more in the last minute. Then he entirely omits the fact that BYU nearly doubled ute yardage in '07. He talks up Mack and BJ (among many other utes and ute team sub-units), but can't even mention one cougar by name among Hall, Unga, Pittman, Collie, or Jorgensen, all of whom are arguably superior to their ute counterparts.
I remain unimpressed. I think Phil is writing to impress a readership that he believes is biased against BYU.
This guy is a tool.
And does phil think the 05 ute win in overtime wasn't lucky?
I actually wrote him back an email pointing out that while BYU won the last two games in the last minute, stopping the utes from having a six game winning streak in the series, that EVERY game in the last twelve years, with the exception of the 2004 Alex Smith led Utah team, was decided by a TD or less. They're always close. I pointed out that IF BYU doesn't lose their first three QB's to injury and played with their 4th string QB in a bad weather game, they don't lose 3-0 in 2003. I pointed out that BYU was within one play of winning in overtime in 2005, where a TD pass just fell short. Since we're talking about "if's", IF one play in each of a few games had been different, then BYU would be something like 7-1 against Utah the last eight years. But that's why we don't care about IF's. BYU made the plays the last two years, and anyone who watched the games knew that Utah was lucky to be in them.
I, of course, also pointed out that Utah will have some nice wins, and then they'll have some horrible losses. That's what they do. They could totally beat Michigan, and then come home and lose to San Diego State. That's Utah football, especially under Coach Whittingham. They don't have the talent that BYU does, they certainly don't have the coaching that BYU does, and they don't have the confidence right now that BYU does.
