BYU's Historical Preseason AP Rankings 2 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 1
According to http://www.appollarchive.com/football/index.cfm, BYU has been ranked in the preseason AP poll 9 times since 1981, with the highest preseason ranking coming in 1985, #10 (with 1 first place vote):

1981: 16
1985: 10 (1)
1986: 16
1989: 19
1990: 16
1991: 19
1992: 24
1993: 19
1997: 19

Note the nice run of preseason love from 1989 to 1993. Based on these numbers, we will likely get our second highest preseason rank ever for 2008, at least until 2009. Go Cougs!

That '85 team really was BYU's best team ever, but unfortunately, it is largely forgotten because key injuries kept it from having the best season ever. It beat defending Cotton Bowl champs Boston College, defending Orange Bowl champs Washington, and then #2 ranked Air Force (finished #5, 12-1). A fluke loss to UCLA (finished #7, Rose Bowl champs) and an even more fluke loss to UTEP really hurt. It finished losing in the Citrus Bowl to 9-3 Ohio State. This team could really play--it beat Wyoming 59-0 and Utah State 44-0 on back-to-back weekends. If I were to chose BYU's best team ever (not season), in my mind, it's between the '85 and the '96 teams.

Okay, rant over.

If my memory is correct, the 1984 team started the season with an eleven game win streak dating to the first game of 1983 (against Baylor). To be unranked at the start of that season was the ultimate insult especially after going 53-9 for the previous five years.

I do agree that the '85 team may have been the best (at least as far as beating strong competition), but the UTEP loss was a real stain on the season. Was that the year that UTEP did all the trick plays (3 QBs in the game at once, & etc)?

The only thing I really remember about the UTEP game was with BYU marching to take control of the game, Bosco trying to force a short 2-3 yard touchdown pass that resulted in a 101-yard pick-six. Final score, UTEP 23, BYU 16.

As I recall, the three disappointing losses in 1985 were largely due to Robbie Bosco having a shoulder injury that was undiagnosed at the time but which later prevented him from ever getting to play with the Green Bay Packers after he was drafted into the NFL.

He had lost the ability to throw deep without floating the pass. In those games he floated a deep pass for a key interception that killed late scoring drives.

In the Utep game, I still remember seeing the cockroaches or some other bugs crawling all over the field. I remember that Utep had not won a game and if I recall never did win another game. BYU was #7 at the time if I remember. Later there were rumors that Utep had the BYU headphones bugged and were stealing calls. It did seem like they knew what was going to happen on every play. And there was the symbolism of the bugs (cockroaches) to tip of the scheme. Others just use that game as another case of Norm Chow being too predictable.

If I remember, UCLA scored on a long bomb late in a game that BYU had led the entire game.

If Bosco had been healthy, BYU wins them all. Heck the guy even beat Michigan on one leg in 1984.

Interestingly, in the greatest BYU seasons, they were often not ranked at the beginning. I don't think I saw the Sarkisian 14-1 team on the list either.

Let's hope our man, Max Hall stays healthy all season including a BCS Bowl. BYU could lose 4 games this season, but if the defense is as pleasant a surprise as they were every game but the Tulsa game last year, BYU wins them all.

Go Cougs

Bib

Yeah, BYU wasn't ranked in the preseason in 1979, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1996, 2001, 2006, or 2007 - all two or fewer loss seasons. It also seems better not to be ranked in the pre-season (though, the BCS world is different). We wind up ranked higher at the end of the season in those cases.
