Pick the Winners - Any Upsets? 2 Months ago Karma: 2
Below are what I think are games (these are not all of the games being played on this date) to follow - as far as teams and scores are concerned on the first full week of Div. I football - Saturday, August 30th. Losses to any the favored teams could bode well for BYU (assuming BYU wins). Do you see any upsets here? I've marked the games that I thought could go either way. What's your thoughts?

Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn

Hawaii at Florida

Tennessee-Martin at South Florida

Georgia Southern at Georgia

Utah at Michigan

Western Michigan at Nebraska

Youngstown State at Ohio State

Chattanooga at Oklahoma

Coastal Carolina at Penn State

Florida Atlantic at Texas

Akron at Wisconsin

Villanova at West Virginia

South Carolina State at UCF

Washington at Oregon

Southern Utah at Air Force

Ohio at Wyoming

USC at Virginia

Appalachian State at LSU

McNeese State at North Carolina

TCU at New Mexico

Northern Iowa at Brigham Young

Arkansas State at Texas A&M

Eastern Washington at Texas Tech

North Texas at Kansas State

Boston College at Kent State

Michigan State at California

Idaho State at Boise State

Alabama at Clemson

Northern Arizona at Arizona State

You really think that UW has a chance at Oregon? I'm not saying they don't, and I would love it if they did, but I just think that UW would have a really hard time pulling that one off.

da dawgs and da ducks playing the first game of the season makes it pretty difficult to predict a wiener.

ive always wondered about schools such as duckville where classes don't start until 9/29, after the 5th game of the season. i wonder how much students have to pay since they've already missed half of the season?

Have you noticed a trend here? A majority of the big name schools have a rather easy opening opponent. Sure there are about a half dozen exceptions, but for the most part the top schools start with a soft schedule. Not that that is wrong, but that is interesting. There are advantages and disadvantages for starting with an easy schedule.

What do you think is a disadvantage? I can think of one: The pollsters probably don't get too impressed with a team that wins a game they are supposed to win, so a team doesn't move up much with such a win. What do you think?

I agree, beating high school teams may lead to getting leap-frogged rather moving up. However, I still see the benefits to playing "warm-up" games too. Last year's October game didn't make an sense at all.
