Help!! 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 18
So I took a date to the BYU/Wyo game last night and had a slightly embarassing moment...she overheard the PA announcer call "timeout on the floor". She asked what it meant to have a timeout "on the floor"? I tried to give a good response but quickly realized I don't really know what that means! It became a laughable moment which she reminded me of the rest of the night. But now I have to save face and find out why it is called a "timeout on the floor" versus a simple "timeout". I've played and watched basketball my whole life (I'm 35) and can't believe I didn't know why they call it that! Anyone have a comment?........

Not all timeouts are a result of a coach calling one. There are TV timeouts, referees will call timeouts to review something, even timeouts for electrical issues with scoreboards or second clocks.

And unless that girl was a coaches kid, you might have been able to tell her anything. (i.e time-out on the floor is the "obligatory make-out session time for couples attending the game" )

They always have the media timeouts. first opportunity under 16 minutes, 12 minutes and 8 minutes and 4 minutes I believe. Those are the tv breaks that just happen because they need to squeeze in some good ad time.

I had a companion who did IT work at Texas A&M before his mission, and of course was a diehard Aggies fan. He said that at College Station, they have a saying at football games--"when Texas A&M scores, so do you"--and he said that the coeds down there are very amiable about this rule. Anyone think we could implement a similar policy in Provo, along with the "wear blue" push of late?

That is exactly the answer I gave, that it was likely a tv timeout. I must not have sold my answer well because she didn't think I had any idea what I was talking about! That's what caught me off-guard. I know all about tv timeouts, officials timeouts, full timeouts, :20 second timeouts, yada yada. But for some reason I just couldn't give a good, confident answer on this one!

And in response to your second answer...I only wish I had thought of that at that moment, would have been great...hmmm!!

Where do I sign? Last night would have been a great starting point!
