Some of you obviously didn't read the article. Shame on you (MajorCougar, NorthernCougar) being being lazy and asking questions that I already linked the answer to.
A COURT OF LAW has required Malone to pay $125 Paternity a week since the DNA TEST proved he was the father of the 13-year of girl's child. As you would have known if you hadn't just clicked "reply" before reading.

Again, fine - paternity test filed. But what was a 13-year-old doing hanging out with college students? Did Karl really know her true age? Why now (25 years after the fact), as opposed to any time earlier... This may be some reasons why this is paying a paternity suit, rather than a court-decided matter.
He made a mistake (apparently); what he is done in the community of Salt Lake and for the NBA are still great accomplishments. If the issue has been resolved with paying the suit, (and no legal COA is to follow), then why are we still "ooing" and "awing" all over it. It's past history.

Seriously- What's wrong with you? A 20-year old taking advantage of a 13-year old girl is a TERRIBLE thing (that's why they have laws against it, and why 400-or-so children were abducted by the government in Texas this month)! It's despicable of you to try to pin the fault on the little girl. And decent people who read this article will have to take a second look about seeing Karl Malone as any sort of hero or role model, which from a moral/ethical standpoint he clearly isn't. The article came out because Karl's son who he refuses to have contact with just got taken in the NFL draft last month. Again, which you would know if you had read it.

It's interesting this story comes out now, after what, 25 years later?
I'll withhold judgement until until a verdict is reached in court. Otherwise, a man is presumed innocent until guilty.
I would still hold Karl Malone in high regard for the things he has done as a Jazz player and citizen of the state of Utah.
You forgot to add "in a court of law". But since this is not a court of law I would go on the facts as have been laid out.
Son (Demetrius Bell - a recent top draft pick for the Buffalo Bills football team) is his son.
Mother (Gloria bell) is 12 to 13 years older than her son.
Karl was 20 yrs old and a college sophomore at the time
That's all I can come up with I guess I would drop the charges at this point.
Again, I don't know all the details of the story (and, not being a lawyer), I will not pass judgement until done so in a Court of Law.
However, has a paternity test been done? Just because someone says/confesses they are the father/son, does not necessarily make it so. Does DNA confirm this? (Again, if it has been established, I haven't heard that yet).
What role was the girl playing? Without making excuses, I wonder why she was hanging out where college-aged kids hang out. Did Karl know her true age then? Has not everyone seen some 13-year-olds today that look 3-5 years older than they really are?
Again, why is this coming out 25 years later? (I'm going with the adage, "Follow the money") Something just isn't adding up here, IMO. Is there an "agenda"?
Again, I'm not trying to make excuses, but we just don't have all the facts yet. Let's wait and see what comes out in a Court of Law, rather than, like the media, come to a pre-conceived opinion.
From espn
"
His reputation took a hit in 1998 when it was revealed he had been involved in two paternity suits involving women from back home in Louisiana, both cases being settled out of court. Blood test analysis set the probability that Malone was the father of Demetrius Bell at 99.3 percent."
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/classic/bio/news/story?page=Malone_Karl
And why is it coming out now? Well his "son" was just drafted by the Buffalo Bills.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nfl&id=3371150
http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/columns/story/334471.html
But my point is that this is the court of public opinion not a court of law. We don't need "all" the facts. I just need the paternity test and the age difference between the mother and the son. I don't need to know any extenuating circumstances or have a "smoking gun". If an official test is confirmed then I can make up my own mind.
Also, I don't think anyone is pressing charges so I don't think you will get "all the facts" through discovery, nor a verdict to fall back on. Just what already exists. The statute of Lim is as follows. He was lucky she wasn't any younger. Under 12 is a capital offense.
La. C.Cr.P. Art. 571
No time limitation - for any crime for which the punishment may be death or life imprisonment.
Art. 571.1
For certain sexual offenses - Time allotted for prosecution, which involves a victim under 17, shall be ten years. This ten-year period begins to run when the victim attains the age of eighteen.
Art. 572
Non-capital offenses:
(1) Six years, for a felony punishable by imprisonment at hard labor;
(2) Four years, for a felony not punishable at hard labor.
I also hold that OJ is a murderer even though he was found "not guilty" by a court of law.
As for Karl, I'm torn because it looks like he got away with stealing a 13 year old girl's virtue and seriously hampered her future all for a momment of self gratification. I have read of a lot of good things that he has done, and I am glad he has grown, but I can't just look the other way. I would need some sort of reaction from him. In other words will he "man up" and take responsibility for his actions?

MajorCougar, having sex with a 13 year old is far more than just a mistake; it is a crime and it really does not matter if the 13 "hung out" around older people or not. Whether Malone knew that this 13 year old really was 13 or 14 or 15 or 16 etc is also irrelevant...it is a crime. Malone may have done wonderful things for SLC and the Jazz etc. during his tenure there (he sure did not while he was a Laker), but such good facts do not excuse the conduct

I would also add that even if she weren't a minor, it is still pathetic. Any "man" who fathers a child and will not even aknowledge the the kid has issues.
