Looking back, if a viewer doesn't hale from a Judeo-Christian culture, then the entire premise of the first movie - searching for the ark of the covenant -could have been offensive, or at least far-fetched. And the fact that in the movie the ark is actually found and turns out to have mystical powers that kill the people who open it, such a viewr might think the show was dissapointing. But the plot is not a stretch for Speilberg, given his heritage.
The second movie must have required non-Christians to put their concerns aside as Indiana found the Challace that Christ himself used at the last supper, and that very cup did in fact have powers to give life to the faithful and take life from the greedy. This one could have been seen as a sellout on the part of Mr. Speiberg by his congregation (I'm sure he is given a pass because its a noble business, this hollywood stuff).
So this one, having actuall aliens, isn't really out of form for entire saga.
I liked the movie every bit as much as the others.
