Karma to you for this find. Interestingly, this article neglected to describe the how or why he was allowed to return...

I'd be very curious to know how those mechanisms went into action!

This is from the SL Tribune's story:
Kent Walton received a telephone call from an LDS Church leader notifying him of the re-instatement Thursday afternoon, but did not wish to reveal the leader's name, his father said.
The leader did not provide a reason for the reversal, Kenneth Walton said.
"We don't know that, either," Kenneth Walton said. "We just believe that it was a mistake. Sometimes people make mistakes."


So apparently, the Church leader didn't even tell the Waltons why Kent was reinstated.
