BREAKING NEWS: So'oto, Hooks suspended 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 9

I don't really care so much what the reason for the suspension is. That's between the players and Bronco. I'm just wondering how this is going to affect next season.

Assuming they aren't able to come back what kind of impact is this going to have? I'm guessing that George and Pitta will be ready and able to step up at TE. I'm just wondering how Hooks absence is going to change things on the defensive side. I'm hoping that with all the hype over the defense this year, we've got the personnel to step up there as well.

Any thoughts?

Hooks was seeing a good amount of time, mostly with the 2's IIRC, due to injuries to and the rehab of Nixon, Doman, and Staffieri.

I hope it's nothing too major. Wasn't it Tialavea that was suspended last year but was able to come back, but missed the AZ game? If so, does anyone know/remember if he was allowed to fully participate during off-season workouts? Will these two participate?

Yes is was Tia but I don't remember if he was allowed to participate in summer workouts or not. Just off the top of my head I'd say no but I could very well be wrong.

Talo over at TBS said it's not really that big of a deal and he doesn't anticipate them missing much more time than just the rest of the spring including the B&W game.

If it ended up being worse than expected and they lost playing time due to their 'behavior', as much as I would hate to miss So'oto, I almost think missing Hooks would be worse. The other TE's are doing really well (Pitta's spring play has far surpassed anything anyone would have expected out of him having just returned from his mission) and could do an admirable job filling in for Vic. But I think our defense is built on a rotation of the two deep to 1.) mix up coverages and 2.) keep the guys fresh and running at max speed every play they are on the field. Hooks has been getting quite a bit of praise this spring for his progress and with Staff's injury history he would likely see alot of time this season in the middle with Doman, Poppinga, and Markell.

In my opinion So'oto will be missed more than Hooks. So'oto is the best-blocking tight end on the team, and that's huge in our offense. Without a powerful tight end, someone the defense has to account for both on the line and in the secondary, defenses can cheat either against our run or our passing game. With a tight end who can both block and catch, which So'oto can, a lot more of our offense gets opened up. Pitta is a better blocker than George, but he's not as good as So'oto. In the headlines, we hear about the catches and yards that both So'oto and Pitta have been making, but we haven't heard about the good work that So'oto does on the line. We will miss that if he's gone this fall.

As far as Hooks goes, he's been seeing a lot of time with the 2's and has even been rotating in with the first team. He is bigger and stronger this year and has been raising his game, but he is still a couple of steps slower than some of the other linebackers, including inside backers like Poppinga. We will miss the depth he would have provided, however, and if Staffieri and/or Poppinga go down this fall, we will miss him on the field. But, in my opinion, his absence will probably not hurt as much as So'oto's.

At this point, I still don't know what happened or whether this is a long-term situation or temporary. We've already lost Matangi Tonga for the year (supposedly), and now if we lose these two guys as well, it will mean that two starters and a second-stringer will be out this fall. Man, when will these guys learn that Bronco and BYU mean business when it comes to the honor code?

If I hear anything further, I'll let you know.

I don't see this anywhere on TBS. Can you tell us where you found it?

It was in the premium forum under a post by Scott Paul IIRC commenting on the suspensions.

EDIT: just checked it again and Talo further went on to say later that it was just a matter of being in the wron place at the wrong time but that he still didn't see it keeping them out any longer than the B&W game.

Thanks. I haven't been there, but I'll check it out. Thanks again for the heads-up.

[color=green]IMO, this is a big deal. Anytime someone is suspended it hurts the team. I don't see how you can just dismiss a suspension. More than likely, both players will miss at least one game in the fall.

I also have to wonder why the majority of the suspensions under Bronco have been Polynesian and from Calif. (Tialavea, Tonga, So'oto, etc). [/color:38438f9bca]
