I'm a convert too. Brought up on football, baseball, basketball but ended up wrestling and running distance. Did the last two for BYU even. I hoped by first son would follow in my footsteps...he didn't. He tried everything but just loved soccer. By age ten he didn't want to do any other sports. He took all the other siblings there as well. I figured if I was going to bond with him in the field of dreams kind of way, I needed to learn the sport and knock it around with him. My son is now an Olympic Developmental player for Oregon--one of the best players in the state of Oregon, and the younger ones look to be better. We even built a soccer field and had the BYU mens team over last week where I watched my boy play with them.
I was clueless about soccer 12 years ago (we laugh about how we took Zack to his first soccer camp with his shinguards over top of sweatpants). I learned the game with him though and now play on indoor teams and in adult leagues. I am occasionally asked if I played in college or HS which is always flattering. I watch a ton of soccer on TV as well. Most of all, I love to coach and have done so at many levels. I am coaching two of my children's teams now and will do so for another 10 years or so. I am told I should ref but have no desire to. Having reffed basketball, baseball and wrestling I know it is much easier to see the call "right" from the sideline.
I didn't miss one home football game in seven years of undergrad and grad school at BYU and still catch most all televised games (no thanks to the recent shafting) but I get KBYUTV at home on Satellite and YEARN for BYU games on TV.
