The article seems to make it pretty clear that only BYU students are trying out. Can someone please explain to me why only BYU students can participate? Is there an NCAA rule which prohibits non-students from trying out or is this a BYU regulation?

Here is what I found.

The 2004-2005 NCAA constitution says:

14.1.8
To be eligible to participate in organized practice sessions, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree

Just started doing a few searches on-line and there's not much. Starting with the freshman:
