That was the last time BYU beat UCLA in football. Since then, UCLA has beat BYU 6 times in a row (85, 91, 92, 93, 95, 07). That's right, since Steve Young, we have gone 0-6 against UCLA. I sure hope that the coaches and players are not believing all this press and fan rumbling about wishing we had a "better" opponent. I think we will beat UCLA IF IF IF the team is mentally prepared for a battle. If they go in there thinking they are better than UCLA, then Katie bar the door! If you want proof, look no further than the Tulsa game. Team members admitted afterward that they did not respect Tulsa going into the game. I hope they don't make the same mistake for this game as they made in Tulsa or as Oregon made last year against us (I know, BM is not Belotti, but that doesn't mean the players won't believe the kind of stuff Belotti was saying out loud last year). I hope the team is motivated by the earlier loss and wants revenge.

So if we can beat, even crush UCLA in the bowl game, maybe it's an indication that 2007 will be a prelude to greatness, much like 1983 was a prelude to greatness for 1984.

11-1 in 1983, with a victory over UCLA, led to an undefeated season and a national championship in 1984.

11-2 in 2007 with a victory over UCLA, leading to an undefeated season and ? in 2008?

Of course, we'll need a Pitt to start off our season and rise in the polls, not two Div IIA teams to replace Nevada and UCLA...

That '83 team in my mind was the best BYU team ever. That UCLA team went to the Rose Bowl that year.

Here's one thing I love about Bronco, he's reversing all of the negative trends for BYU. Think about it:

1. When Bronco took over BYU had 3 straight losing seasons: REVERSED in 2005 no losing seasons since.

2. BYU lost 4 straight Bowl Games: REVERSED in 2006.

3. BYU lost 6 straight games against Pac-10 teams: REVERSED in 2006.

4. BYU hasn't won 2 straight conference titles since 1996: Reversed in 2007.

I'm confident he can reverse the trend against UCLA, but it won't be a gimmie game. I'll bet it will be much closer than the Las Vegas Bowl from last year.

Much of it will depend on how the Bruins react on the field to the loss of their coach. Will they be demoralized? Or will they be angry and playing with a grudge? It looks like the DC will be acting as headcoach, so there will not be a newby figurehead.

5. BYU hasn't beaten a top 25 team (at home or on the road) in ~10 years: REVERSED in 2006.
