That game made me sick. We looked terrible--certainly not like the #17 team in the country.
We did a terrible job running the ball and stopping the run. Our special teams (punting) was terrible and the kicking game has no confidence and isn't thought of at 40+ yards. Our offensive line was exposed again--especially Reynolds. And though Collie is amazing, I really wish that Hall would wean himself off of looking to Collie almost exclusively (that said Collie was still able to catch for 107 yards).
Some might say that a win is a win but I disagree. Style points and spread matter, especially when the media sets it up as a hot, healthy non-BCS team struggling to barely/miraculously beat a 6-6 middle-of-the-road PAC-10 team that played their 4th string QB and was missing 10 starting players.
Nonetheless, congratulations Cougars for having enough heart and playing just good enough. At least I'm not as disappointed as I could have been...
I disagree with you to a point. This is still a YOUNG team, and their youth was exposed by a coach looking to win a job. But this is a huge game in terms of the program, and the team knowing that they can win close wins will launch this team in the future!
Don't forget that UCLA has owned BYU for the past 22 years, with 7 straight wins. BYU got the UCLA monkey off their back and will have the mindset they can beat these guys and play even better in September, when the game will mean even more than tonight's game did.
Plus it shuts up those puke fans who kept pointing out that they beat UCLA and BYU didn't earlier.
#1 I agree that BYU is a young team (and will be even younger next year on defense) and we all expect them to grow. That's a good thing.
#2 BYU did not get the UCLA monkey off their back. We are now 2-7 against them with our only win in 20 years coming on a miracle over an offensively depleted team. Next year they should have a healthy team--a whole different story.
#3 It's hard to shut up Utah fans--especially when they scored more points in one game against UCLA than we did in two games.
I agree with your point that they have a great defense and a great O-line--that's fine, but it's still disappointing to see your guys get out-muscled all night long. Neither line was able to hold them throughout the game.
Once again: congratulations Cougars, 11-2 is much better than 10-3.
