We played a gimped UCLA team on a relatively home field stadium. 99% of the time Horvath gets that fg. We are very very lucky, and I'm very very happy, but we played poorly on offense and defense in the second half. When you're up against a freshman qb, he cannot get comfortable like he did towards the end of the game. He should be like a deer in headlights and instead grew up a bit.
This game was about a C- for BYU and I'm disappointed the team didn't show up.
I'm so relieved we won, but the offensive play calling was a fiasco and I don't care how much you trust your running backs, you don't hand off with 20 seconds left when you know UCLA would have been content to go to half, letting the clock run out. That touchdown at the end of the 1st half carried UCLA through the 2nd. I wouldn't have been surprised had UCLA not scored there, if they started to lay down in the 2nd half.
Anyone that thought that Robert Anae would be approached for head coaching jobs needs to check their heads after this game.
The pros- our stars Unga, Hall, Oline- etc. have a lot to work on during the spring and fall and this will give them good reason. I'd much rather learn a lesson with a W than an L so thank goodness it was a W.
I will miss Bryan Kehl as much as any BYU player since Ty Detmer...and whatever team Kkehl lands with in the NFL will be my 2nd fav team behind the 'Boys.
Maybe in a week or so, I'll be happier it turned out this way, but right now I still feel sick about this game. We played poorly against a pretty mediocre team with a very very good defense.
I understand what you are saying, but I gotta point out some things. UCLA has an incredible front line and running the ball was always their offensive strength this season. They have stellar backs in reserve and enough time to prepare for BYU. Their Oline controlled BYU most of the night. They would have controlled many teams the way they played tonight because BYU hasn't had as bad a night defending the run as they did tonight.
Second, Walker had his boys motivated so he would get a fair shake at getting the HC job. That was clearly evident. They want him to stay. The defense really is that good. They could rush 5-6 all night because their CBs could man up.
BYU did play poorly at times with all the dropped passes and missed blocks tonight. And Anae's call to end the 1st half nearly bit BYU in the butt. BUT BYU's defense played well enough to hold UCLA to 16 points, 10 of which were off turnovers.
I really think you need to give UCLA more credit and remember they really were a top 15 team at one point and their defense was the reason. That defense showed up again tonight and nearly pulled off the victory.
Lastly, on that long completion, Bronco gambled with the blitz and UCLA made the play where Fowler missed the pick. It was close. BYU held when it counted and this game was a well deserved win against a much tougher opponent than their record belies. This was BYU's best win of the season because they won against a great defense while they sputtered on offense.
