I doubt our narrow escape against 6-7 UCLA impressed anyone outside of Cougar Nation. A win is a win and we may move up just based on the record given many voters probably did not even watch the game.
Re BCS next year, you need to understand the effect the voters have on the rankings. Utah and BSU made it hard for voters to blow off mid-majors who are undefeated. UH just made that easier.
It looked like UH got whipped by the #5 team in the country. That might have been the number 1 team in the nation. It sure looked like the #1 defense in the country - even better than the UCLA defense that shut us right down.
I suggest we wait and see what we have next year and let them prove it on the field. They will have that opportunity early and often. If BYU goes 12-0, they will still get in the BCS. If they go 11-1, they better hope the BCS has the mediocre field they had this year, and that Notre Dame still sucks, and that the MWC shows well against BCS teams, etc., or they will not get the ranking needed. If they had been 11-1 this year with only a loss to UCLA, I do not think they would have gotten ranked high enough to force thier way in.
Don't forget that it also depends on whether Boise State or some other Mid Major runs the table. Not clear who that would be next year, but there seems to be one every year lately.
Check all BCS Major Powers, except PAC 10 who has not yet joined the trend and you will find
Teams playing only required conference games on the road and scheduling home games with 2-3 cupcakes for non-conference. If you only go on the road 4-5 times and have 2-3 gimmes at home, the BCS conspiracy is trying to ensure tha there are plenty of BCS 12-0, 11-1, and 10-2 teams to fill the top 12 slots.
BCS teams are refusing to play mid-majors as they do not want to take the risk of losing once in a while and they also do not want to give the mid-majors opportunities to get ranked high. It is a conspiracy.
In 2007, this happened to UH when a BCS opponent backed out. They begged Michigan to play them. Michigan went with Appalachian State instead and lost, but just won their bowl game.
The name of the game has become do not lose.
