Ok guys. It is quite simple. I am ready to start a petition and take this to the "heads" that lead. But before doing so, I want the student to confirm to us that there is nothing else. Because if we push, the truth will come out. One side will be embarrased...the school for allowing this error or the student for not telling the full story. So, if he is willing to have his past (at the Y) studied in depth, and has nothing to hide, then I am willing to push this case forward. If anybody has a way of contacting him, and getting the news back to us, please do so.
But as I warned above, be ready for all the consequences. If there is something hidden from the public, it will become public notice. But I'm more than ready to take on the administration to get him re-instated and take this to the next level.
Waiting for a response... the_other_blackguy@byu

"Those individuals who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are also expected to maintain the same standards of conduct, except church attendance."

quote]

This is rediculous.

1. He WAS going to church, unless he was lying, sometimes in his own ward and other times in other wards (how many others do this and nothing happens??).
2. The fact that he still wants to be here and play baseball and finish school leads me to believe that he didn't do anything wrong.
3. How many other kids who don't play sports don't go to church regularly and still keep their eclesiastical endorsement? I know there are quite a few in my ward. Be consistent dang it.
4. The requirement for members to attend church regularly, exluding non-members is idiotic. So basically with that said, Kent could just have said that he's not a member anymore, therefore, he wouldn't have to attend church regularly and kept his endorsement. To hold some members of the school to one standard and others to a different standard doesn't make any sense and is completely inconsistent. Seriously, say Kent left the church some odd months ago then he wouldn't have even been required to attend church regularly and could still stay and play ball and go to school. They need to change that requirement.

I have a brother in law who just returned from his mission 6 months ago and who is attending church in Utah. I don't know all the facts of this guys story, but if he's anything like my brother in law, this would rank up there as one of the all time worst bishop decisions I've ever heard of.

What I mean is that, my bro in law is 22, and a good looking, clean cut kid. He is fully active in the church, but I know he hasn't been to his own ward in 5 months. He drives all over the place to go to church with different girls all over Utah. Two weeks he's there, and then the next week he met a new girl and he's over there. You get the point. He maintains a calling as an assistant scout leader and hes an active home teacher. Just because you don't show up in your own ward doesn't mean you should have your endorsement pulled.

Oh, by the way, he lives in Glenwood and attends BYU. No names though, I don't want to get him kicked out for lack of activity

I personally know the Stake President and he is tough but fair (merciful even), which suggests to me there is likely something else to this.

I feel bad for the kid and for BYU if his endorsement is not reinstated and his situation really is every bit as innocent and understandable as the Salt Lake Tribune article claims.

This thread has been very interesting. I can fully understand why people often no longer find the need to attend Church every sunday. Sometimes it is because Church attendance is no longer fulfilling their spiritual needs.

Since I moved to AZ in 2003 my wife and I have been in four different wards. I have had one calling here - seven months as a nursery teacher in 2004 (my wife was the nursery leader and asked for me as a teacher because most of her teachers were too unreliable). She has had two callings in that time, the other being a VT district leader for three months prior to our ward splitting.

Never in my life have I felt that it was my responsibility to ask the Bishop for a calling. Even now I expect the Bishop to make that determination. Other than tithing settlement, and temple recommend interview, we've never met with any of the four bishops we've had here in AZ. I don't think any of the last three knew who we were. Even attending tithing settlement is hard when you have to introduce yourself to your Bishop despite living in the ward for most of the previous year.

I just remembered what class I had with Kearl-

He is the Economics 101 professor, the huge one in the JSB with class sizes of 2000 freshman. Kearl is a brilliant economist, but he was also very arrogant, loud, and rude. I found him hilarious, as his favorite classroom past-time was to bash down any student who made a comment, embarrassing them as much as possible. He was kind of the opposite of your typical BYU prof, which is why I enjoyed his class. One of my roommates actually had a nightmare about him once after a rough week in Econ.
