cottonwood high school does have a high opinion of it's sports programs, though only in recient years. daddy cate, who was on the utah football team, has put millions into the school(ie fields, weight rooms, coaches ect). they also pull kids in from all over the valley, and not just for sports. 70% of the school's population are bussed in due to over crowding in west side schools, and excess capacity at chs.

this has created some interesting dilemas for the school. only 1 of the nine starting players on the state champion baseball team lived in the boundry, and several of the star football players are/were also from outside the boundry (including stanley havili). in-boundry students are conflicted as tranfers come into the school and take their spots. do you play for a loser, or sit the bench for a winner.

this may not be a dilema for long. it appears that chs is on the chopping block, and could close due to school district re-alignment in the next few years.

regarding the katoa kid, it is not unreasonable that he hasn't followed byu football. many of the poly's that live in utah come here from cali, or direct from the islands. the article also implies that he is relitively new to football, and is still trying to learn the game.

ps where is the spell check button?????

Sorry to rain on the parade guys but Katoa is from Euless, Texas. Home of Trinity High. He never followed any Utah football as he was watching TEXAS Football. Which means Texas football 24/7. Most of them rednecks barely know Utah is a state let alone has colleges in it.

Lynn moved here barely over 2 years ago.

ALSO, BYU has yet to offer him. WHY would he come if we are about the only ones in the country, it sounds like, that HAVE NOT offered him a full ride???????

Finally he is a great player but he's not a typical BYU type kid. I'll leave it at that.

ALSO, Cottonwood is doing a very good job in their sports programs in general. The success they are having is quite Timpview-like in that success breeds success.

Many excellent players are open enrolling at Cottonwood to be a part of something special. Not all players are directed out of state by any means there are more players on Utah's roster from Cottonwood than any other school. Weber state also gets 1 or 2 players PER YEAR.

Crowton didn't do much of a job there. The jury is out on how well Doman is doing but I know the Cottonwood coaches came to the coaching clinic and several kids were at Jr Day last month and more are expected Tomorrow (June 1) as well. ALSO both Doman and Coach Anae have come to workouts during May recruiting.

In the meantime ANY time a wealthy guy wants to spend some money upgrading a PUBLIC high school, in any way..................THAT'S OK BY ME!!!!

His being from Texas explains his love affair with the Longhorns. If he is LDS, then he went to the Euless 2d Ward, a ward with I shared buildings when I lived in Texas. The kids loved BYU, but that was pre Crowton when I was there. I believe BYU offered him according to one of the interviews he gave, but it sounded like he wasn't all that excited and might have turned it down already. Just a guess mind you. Further, BYU has recruited from Trinity in the past so it's not like he hadn't heard of them as he claims unless he truly is new to football.

If he's a die hard Texas fan, then good luck to him should he get an offer. If he isn't committed to BYU like Mendenhall expects of his recruits, then it would be a waste time on both parts. Further, if he isn't all that thrilled with being LDS, iffin he is, then BYU would be a mistake and could jeopardize his chances at a pro career.

But thanks for the info, it helps explain alot about why he doesn't appear to be on BYU's radar though he is considered the top Utah recruit on one board.
