It are these comments specifically that SOMETHING needs to change, otherwise, it's going to get worse for BYU and other "non-BCS" teams, before it gets better.

He looks like a fine athlete who will probably go elsewhere. He is a 6'2" 220 linebacker who runs a 4.58 forty. He says his first choice is Texas, and his second is USC, neither of which had offered him at the time of the last interview (March 19th). His third choice seems to be Oklahoma, which has offered him. Although both BYU and Utah have offered him, he doesn't seem interested:

"I want to get out of state," he said. "They aren't in a big conference and they never play for the national championship. I never really watched them."

He also said he doesn't know much about BYU, which may seem a little unusual for someone playing ball just 35 miles from LaVell Edward Stadium (Cottonwood High School), but if he truly doesn't watch them on TV, that would explain it.

It looks like Lynn is another in-state athlete who will go out of state.

cruiser, thanks for your comments. I thought it was unusual as well that he didn't know much about BYU. Maybe he doesn't have the mtn. Here is a case study as to why the BCS system screws those schools not in the cartel. This is a talented kid who could play for any school, but those schools in his own backyard dont' stand a chance because of the BCS.

I just can't believe there isn't some LDS connection. On the link, it shows he's been offered by USC. I can understand why Texas would be a favorite, but if I were to go out of state for football and got an offer from USC, it would be a no brainer. USC all the way with their track record on linebackers. Yet, being a 3 year starter at BYU would get him on an NFL roster too. Would love to see him say he wants to stay in state so he can help bust up the BCS.

I have heard before that the Coaches at Cottonwood do all they can to get their kids out of state. Rumor or Fact, who knows, but could explain why he doesn't even think about BYU or Utah.

Although it may just be coincidence or rumor, it does seem like the players coming out of Cottonwood have lacked interest in in-state schools. Alex Cate, Stanley Havili, and Simi Fili are the 3 that come to mind in the last 2 yrs. If I remember right, Cate's dad is a coach for the football team at Cottonwood. I think someone on the board mentioned that he encouraged the players to lean toward the out-of-state, big time schools. Alex Cate went to Okl. State, Havili to USC, and Fili to Oregon. It seems like Katoa is going to do the same. Each showed very little interest in state (excluding Havili who just showed some interest at the end...although it probably wasn't serious). So, I could see how the rumors could be valid.

Any 18-year-old that can succeed at a BCS school is likely to go there--I don't see any big waves of high-minded teenagers standing on principle any time soon.

Speaking of the BCS, good ol' Dr. Machen should be presenting his playoff pitch to the SEC presidents in June. Now THAT could shake things up! Here's a story from April on what he's pitching:

I don't know... If the kid lived that close and says "I don't know much about BYU." Is he the kind of player we want at BYU. Sure he is talented, and I hope he does well wherever he ends up...but there are plenty of talented kids who dream of coming to BYU. I would rather leave spots open for those kids than kids who will always be keeping an eye on the BCS schools and wondering "what if..."
I hope he makes the right decision for HIM and doesn't let things like the BCS and National Championships dissuade him. If it is BYU...then great. If it isn't... no big.
