A couple of thoughts:

1. Rose is a good coach but not a great tactician, he doesn't scheme well in fact what he schemed at the beginning of the A&M game (leave Carter open) got Carter hot and that was about the end of the game.

2. Despite losing to the 2nd best team in conference on their home court in the MWC tourney and losing a close one to an A&M team that just about knocked off UCLA, this was a great year for BYU. We won the conference, we beat Louisville, had good losses to Mich St and UNC, beat utah twice, and ended the season with the longest home winning streak in the nation.

3. Pumping your fists and yelling and looking excited doesn't equal heart. There are different kinds of people in this world that show their emotions differently. If Trent and Cummard don't rally their team by yelling it isn't because they don't have heart they just aren't that kind of player. Would it be nice to have a rally person on the team? Yes, but please no more stupid comments about the players not having heart. You don't get to the level of these players without having a lot of heart. They may have more talent than us but I am pretty certain they have worked harder too.

I agree with you on point 1. Sad thing is, A&M knew we'd play them that because that's how we've played everyother team this year and A&M planned for it. What's disturbing and I think telling of Rose's coaching abilities is he didn't anticipate what A&M would do to counter BYU. Good coaches know their own weaknesses, expect they will be exploited and prepare accordingly. Rose's answer for Carter seemed to be "wait and see."

On point two, I agree overall we had a good season, but once again we showed the only teams we can beat are MWC teams or non-MWC teams that are missing two star players. We would not have beaten Louisville if we played them at the end of the season. And, keep in mind, that glorious performance we had against UNC was without their starting point guard who in all likelyhood would have ran circles around our guards. There are no "A's for effort," so in my book there are no good losses. All we showed is we can't beat teams in "Power" conferences (couldn't even beat the WAC's best team).

As for point 3, yes leaders don't have to yell, wave their arms or pump thier chests and such isn't indicitive of heart, but players with "heart" typically show a bit more hussle out on the court. Usually they box out and don't stand around watching one player on their team battle for a rebound. Players with heart will not slack off on defense letting whomever is behind them pick up on their man. Players with heart fight through screens, crash the boards on every shot because they want to get the ball, do whatever they have to stay infront of their man, don't leave leading scorers wide open and move around on offense. With the exceptions of Lee and Jimmer, I didn't see much heart out on the court against A&M.

This is what I was trying to say last Friday and got slammed for it. Be careful when you bring up issues like this, it can really ruffle peoples feathers.

The difference between BYU football and basketball is that the football team is getting better the basketball team isn't.

04 - 05 9 - 21 record
05 - 06 20 - 9 record, tied for 2nd in MWC
06 - 07 25 - 9 record, MWC champions
07 - 08 27 - 8 record, MWC champions

07 - 08 was better than 06 - 07 which was better than 05 - 06 which was better than 04 - 05. Therefore for the last 4 years BYU basketball has gotten better. I have no problem with Gunks opinion, I agree with parts and I disagree with parts but to say that BYU basketball hasn't gotten better when it has is just wrong.

There is no difference between BYU football and BYU basketball right now people!!!!!!!!

BYU Football last two years= Won conference Championship
BYU BB last two years= Won conference Championship

BYU football last two years lost games should have won= Tulsa, Arizona
BYU BB last two years lost games should have won= BSU, Lamar, BSU

BYU football last two years lost games to big time schools= BC, UCLA
BYU BB last two years lost games to BIG SCHOOLS= Mich.St, NC, WF

Bottom LINE PEOPLE- In BYU sports we have yet to show we can win BIG GAMES the Vegas bowl in football is not a big game. We end up there because we can't win the BIG Games. Basketball requires us to win big games to get a better seed and then win a BIG game. We do not play well in big defining moments for either sport over the past two years. We win a mediocre football confernce we actually have won a pretty decent BB confernce. The trend also shows that we always lose a game or two that we should have won and don't because we are eithe un prepared or over confident and don't bring our "A" game.

The direction of BYU Basketball and BYU football are both trending in an upward way but both need to learn how to win defining games that can make a season special. If you can't see this you are blind to where BYU sports is at right now. Don't get me wrong both sports are in a better place right now then they have been in a LONNNNNNNNNNG time, but both have some work to do when it comes to winning when it counts.

Another sad thing is that Coach Rose was more fired up and intense as an assitant coach than as a head coach. He used to really tear into guys when they came out of the game when he was working with Steve Cleveland. You just don't see the passion anymore from him.

Just out of curiosity, how many games did you get to see this year?

In answer to your question, not enough. Even the games that were broadcast in my area, I was busy a couple of those nights. However, last year, while living and Utah and having the mtn, I watched a lot of games, pretty much all of them that were broadcast, and based on the games that I watched this year and last, and even the year before, I don't see the same interaction with players as before. Maybe lack of passion in the wrong term, but he just doesn't seem to get the players as fired up as he used to.

When Rose got hired, he jokingly said that he might end up getting a whole lot of techinical fouls because of his normal style. Has he even gotten one yet?

You know things are good in Cougarland when the fans are arguing over consecutive conference champs! I wonder what they are arguing about on the ute sites. I would imagine it goes something like this. "So what do we have to do to beat BYU this year?" Notice that it applies to both Bball and Fball!

This is a great time to be a cougar fan!

Go Cougars!!!!!!!

To the players on both teams (bball and fb)... Keep up the hard work. We appreciate your blood, sweat, and hard work!!!! I didn't say tears because Cougars don't cry! As evidence I reference you to a cougar linemen's laugh after he broke his leg in the LV bowl! Stong as oxen and tough as nails.

CONGRATULATIONS ON MWC CHAMPS AGAIN!
