Wow, what a quote: "We expect our athletes to follow rules on and off the field and show up on time," said Hauck, who hasn't said when Kessman will rejoin the team.

Seems to me that a lot was made about the Cappacino thing when he was suspended from BYU when everyone knew that he was not suspended for that but was suspended for not coming to practice on time and missing team meetings.

Actually, Kessman was suspended for far more than perpetual tardiness and absenteeism. While it involved a beverage, it was not a cappuccino, and it was not at a Starbucks. However, Kessman could have earned his way back on the team like the other players involved at the party. He and his father chose to instead lie to the media about the incident, which burned any bridges he might have had back to Bronco. If you want to come back to Bronco's team, lying to the media in an attempt to make BYU and BYU football look petty and arrogant is not the way to do it. He was wise to leave after his foolish actions, because he had a LONG way to go to get back into Bronco's good graces.

Damn Mountain Dew did it again.

I'm still trying to figure out why this is still such big news. Continuing to post the details of Kessman's travails at Montana will only pump up the already overinflated egos of Ryan and his father, and perptuate interest in the lies that they spread to the media upon his overdue departure. Who cares? The guy couldn't hack it at BYU, and the team is better without him. Apparently he can't hack it at Montana either. I say, who cares? Let's let it go.

I kind of have to make the opposite argument. I say we should care now. For all the flack that BYU caught with Kessman, you'd think that what's happening at Montana would bolster our argument and support how Bronco handled the issue. The more people that hear it, the more it sounds like Kessman was the problem and not BYU (I realize that realistic BYU fans knew who the problem was from the get go, but let's think outside of our biodome and consider the national and recruiting perspective). Considering the fact that we also have had the eclesiatical endorsement issue come up this year too with athletics, I'd prefer that Kessmans dirty laundry be aired for everyone to see. BYU simply is not a hyperrestrictive petri dish where only one type of person can grow; however some people won't grow wherever they go (ala Kessman).

Has the Des News or Tribune made any mention of Kessmann screwing up again? Considering the relative mountain out of a molehill that was made out of the "cappucino gate" incident, you'd think that those papers would be willing to make mention of the fact that Kessmann managed to get in trouble again, at a D1AA school that doesn't even have an honor code; especially the Des News.

It seems to me that by putting out the fact that Kessman managed to break the rules elsewhere supports what happened at BYU and makes it look a lot less like nit picky and petty cappucino issues. Those papers had no problem printing articles about cappucino gate last fall, they should have no problem backing Bronco and his decision making when the object of the controversy screws up at another school.

I dont' expect them to post an editorial about the issue, I think just the fact that Kessman had been suspended at Montana for breaking team rules and a look back at last fall would be an appropriate article. It seems to me that writing such an article is justified and timely.

I don't want to pile on Kessman; obviously the kid has a lot of issues that he has to deal with and it's easier to pity him than dislike the kid; but BYU football is bigger than any player and I'd prefer that if disinformation exists that it be countered by the relative truth. Mentioning that he screwed up again and has been suspended by Montana is fact; you'd think that the local media would want to make mention of that; especially considering they didnt' hesitate to mention the cappucino issues, etc. in the fall.

While I agree with some of ammoncougars' points, the failures always seem to be thrown back in our faces and affects the university as a whole and , potentially, it's reputation. Without knowing the background of each individual, it is hard to cast an ironclad policy as far the risk goes. But some of them, when we know the type of risk involved, are better off going somewhere else where church funds aren't footing the bill. Just my opinion.

I think you would benefit from reading the article done a few years back ( I couldn't find it) about the implementation of Bronco's recruiting scheme. He speaks to parents, the recruit, and more importantly the religous leader about the character of the recruit. Whethter that a Father, Minister, Pastor, Rabbi, Bishop (if LDS), or whoever. If these people have been deceived it isn't the schools or their own fualt, but the recruits problem.

Although the S.L. Trib loves to embellish potential problems with BYU and the religion behind the school, across the nation it gets minor attention.

Bronco is doing a great deal to ensure that the recruits don't mess up like Crowtons recruits, but you can only do so much. I think that he is doing a fantastic job. He can't help it if the one's closest to the recruit are deceived or even lie to him to get their boy a scholarship.

Just one more year of transferring and he will be able to declare for the draft. It is the only thing for him to do with that much talent.

Seriously, I hope he gets his head on straight. There are more talented people who see it all wasted because they can't get over themselves.
