The South is full of bigots.

I grew up in rural Texas and rural South Carolina. I moved back there after graduating from BYU. Other than the time I spent on my mission and at BYU, I've lived in the South my entire life. The first time I ever left the South was when I was 28 and I had to go to NYC for a few months with my job. While I was there I was absolutely shocked at the amount of racism and bigotry I encountered. It was by far worse than anything I ever saw growing up in South Carolina. NYC was less racially integrated, less egalitarian, less tolerant, and by far more bigoted than my little hometown of 3,000 in South Carolina. I know my experience is only anecdotal, but from what I've seen, I hardly think the South has a monopoly on bigotry or intolerance. Just my opinion. Anyway, I don't mean to get this thread off topic, but I had to respond.

My mom is from the South. I was surprised by the racial division I saw on my visits to my relatives. There are some real angry people on both sides of the divide.

However, I also met alot of people that exuded "Southern Hospitality". And they are more likely to be from the small towns. Seemed to me that the hostility was greater in the bigger cities.

But I live in Idaho. We have plenty of people who are bigoted, but luckily, we have a greater number of people who are trying to live the golden rule.

I don't know about SC, but throughout the rest of the south I would think people with your experience would be in the minority. Assuming that you're white, your race may also make a difference in perception.

Don't let the U-Dub fans get to you. I went to school in the State of Washington and the U-Dubbers really think they are the only school in the nation.

That's to be expected. Heck, most people in Seattle act like Eastern Washington (2/3 of the state) is on another planet.

But, he doesn't have a great arm and he tends to run when he gets in trouble.

Sounds like a kid that used to live in my neighborhood (he put the "hood" in "neighborhood". He eventually got caught and had to pay to replace all those broken windows...
