According to Rick Beuker of ESPN the reason that the Jazz are so dominant at home is:

"It's Salt Lake there's nothing else to do. They're all Mormons and have to be happy with a smile on their face all the time. The Jazz games are their only chance to get vicious."

What an idiotic and ignorant statement

Its definately something that he shouldn't have said, but I thought you were going to say that none of the other fans wanted to travel to Utah because of the close minded people and stupid liquor laws. That's usually the reason given by other MWC fans as to why the MWC Tournament can't be held in the ESA. That and because it would give to much of an advantage to BYU and Utah, but playing in the T&M doesn't give UNLV that big of an advantage.

So Bucher shouldn't have said it, but it could have been worse. When explaining why a team has such a home court/field advantage, just say it is because the fans are passionate about their sports. The other explanations tend to be offensive.

He said he didn't want to paint all mormons with a broad stroke right after he had already done it minutes before and was about to do it again. He also went on to say that the things he's heard from fans at games in salt lake are as bad or worse than any other arena in the NBA. That can be easily explained by the fact that ute fans go to Jazz games.;)

Worst racial epithets from fans I have ever heard at a sporting event were at a Jazz game. Couldn't believe my ears. Made me real embarrassed to be a member of the church. I know not everyone that goes to Jazz games are Mormon, but Utah and Mormons go together, so whatever Jazz fans do gets categorized as being related to Mormons.

Honestly, I agree with Beuker. Look at church basketball. The same high councilman preaching charity on Sunday is yelling on Wednesday at the refs who are members in his stake and starting fights with other ward's team. For some reason competitive basketball brings out the worst in Mormons and I don't think Jazz games are any exception.

Watch my Karma take a nose dive now.

I have to agree here. Basketball is like Mormon carnaval. We let loose our worst behaviors.. well maybe not 'worst' but close.

I went to several Jazz games when I was at BYU in the early 90s. I did not witness anything unusual. Must be the people in the good seats acting like that!

Yup. They don't make movies about our church ball for nothing. This may be a case of we can make fun of ourselves but if someone else does it we get upset.
