Not too surprised. Test the interest level from teams and make it obvious that he has interest in being seen. This is a clever move to get himself some looks outside of the regular season and the mtn. black hole. This will set himself up to be in the discussion from the beginning of next year.
This is all under the assumption that he doesn't receive a lot of looks and comes back for his senior year.
from what i understand this is typical of players who want to find out where they really stand. it allows them to interface with pro teams/scouts, and find out what they do well, and what they need to work on. then they have a year to work out the kinks in their game, to maximize their draft potential. i expect he will be back.
It gets him some face-time with the NBA folk for next year, and it really will help Trent too. The two will be attending the same camps and sharing hotels and such, saving them a wad of change. Testing the waters is an expensive proposition as it is a full-time endeavor and you bear 100% of the travel and lodging costs unless you hire an agent.
