Actually I expect this to be standard practice in the future. Juniors declare, get free trips, practice against better competition and a headstart to marketing themselves to the pros. Then you back out, return to school and go pro the next year.
Heck I would do the same thing
Reminds me of when I was at BYU. In fact you might say I declared early and was drafted by the pros (computer science major). I was a rookie of the year nominee in 1980. Eventually after a fairly long career (numerous trades, some for new draft picks, some for "future consideration", others because the franchise was having financial struggles, etc), I picked up my degree.
A couple times I had success on the free-agent market.
Once, I seriously considered an offer to play in a league overseas but turned it down because I didn't like playing by international rules.
After taking a premature retirement during the dot com bust, I eventually got a chance to do some coaching and even a stretch as GM for a struggling franchise.
Just last month I announced a 2nd comeback attempt (lead developer on a FAA Level "D" flight simulator) and it has been working out very well. They tell me that I'm in the running for comeback player of the year.
After the season is over, I'll be a free-agent. Probably look for a nice opportunity back in the Phoenix market. Next season I hope to cut back on my minutes but expect to be in the game during crunch time.
