I liked this one from a phins message board:
Is Parcells sending a message to Beck that he thinks hes not the future by drafting Henne? Or is he just bringing in competition? All i know is that if your gonna judge beck in the conditions we had last year, you would be a moron. I mean when you've got no runningback, no decent WRs (except for ginn who was a rookie...), and a bad o line and a TE that can't block and the only thing he can catch is a cold. I don't think it matters who you put in there, their not going to do good.

Good summary of last season...

Having been in Ann Arbor during Henne's entire Michigan career I can confidently say that Beck has nothing to worry about.

Beck is a much better QB. Henne wouldn't have started at BYU and he won't start for the Phins.

Beck and Henne NCAA career stats:

  • Player Att Comp Pct Yds TD Int QBRat Att Yds Avg TD

  • Beck 1353 851 62.9 10,644 78 32 143.3 250 42 0.2 9

  • Henne 1387 828 59.7 9,715 87 37 133.9 180 -315 -6.7 3

Henne's best single season completion percentage of 61.9 is lower than Beck's career average.

Henne's Wonderlic score was a 21 or 22. Ryan and Brohm both scored 32.

Beck scored 30 last year.

Interestingly, Henne's stats have been pretty flat for his college career.

  • Year G GS Att Comp Pct Yds Avg Lg TD Int Int% QBRat Rush Yds TD

Amazing how both his yards and his TDs went DOWN every year.

Don't forget that Beck turns 27 before the season starts and Henne turns 23. To put that in perspective, Beck is as old as Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Phillip Rivers, Jason Campbell, and Matt Schuab. Those are the successful QBs in that age group. Then there are the less effective ones like Luke McCown, Chris Simms, Jim Sorgi, Ken Dorsey, Kyle Boller, Rex Grossman, Brock Berlin, Casey Bramlet, Seneca Wallace, Jared Lorenzen, J.P. Losman and Gibran Hamdan. Beck hasn't had a chance to prove himself, but I doubt he gets as long as a 22 year old rookie. Since Beck has yet to prove that he is Eli, Big Ben, Rivers or Campbell, it doesn't surprise me that they would bring in a plan B. Besides Miami picked a Tackle #1 which will help him out a bunch. If I were Eli and the Giants used their second pick on a QB I would be upset, but Beck hasn't proven himself and you can't blame them for bringing in a QB 4 years younger just in case. Plus they didn't want to have Beck starting his first year, and even if they see Henne as their future QB I doubt they want him starting before next year. If Beck can show significant improvement this year and if the team starts turning around, I doubt he loses the starting job.
