No school in the NCAA can give out more than 25 scholarships. Some programs actually offer more kids than they legally can just becuase they know some of them won't qualify academically.

Interesting. It would be nice if about 20 more prospective USC prospects commited before Manti Teo.

Than our chances of having him be a Cougar would greatly increase!

There are basically 10 scholarships left for 08 and we've given offers to 6 guys that we really want. Assuming that only 1 or 2 choose us, that gives us a likely 8 left for all the other kids we'd be recruiting if this were a normal year.

Great, we have 10 scholarships available to dish out while teams like USC have 35. That really helps in recruiting.

How does that happen? How many seniors with scholarships are graduating next year?

We also have the mission program...there are several missionaries returning that also will be receiving scholarships. That always plays into Bronco's recruiting.

Do you know how that works? DOn't they just get the previous years seniors' scholarships?

i think keeping track of schollies would be a terrible job. iirc, they are allowed 85 chollies total. then they have to keep track of graduation, missions, red shirts, and other (medical rs ect). then something like m. tonga having grade problems when they expected this to be his final year, and the parameters change. then there are the kids who don't come back after a mission (ie b olsen) or a kid coming home early and transfering because there are no schollies available (iirc the last one was filiaga), and you have a very fluid situation.

what is the most irritating to me is that this year there is the biggest blue chip class of lds kids i have ever seen, and we are sitting on a short stack of schollies. that's unfortunate.

I think you are right...all of these play into the scholorship ferris wheel. There are tons of senarios to play out. Keep in mind also that Bronco has several walk ons that receive scholorships as well. I am sure that when one comes available they would go to those folks first. It's a commitment thing. When Bronco tells a walk on that when one comes available, I am sure he won't hold it to give to a new recruit. Tonga's probably went to a walk on that had an outstanding spring. That's just my guess.

So did Tonga lose his scholarship? If so, does he automatically get it back if he becomes academically eligible again?
