Again, fine - paternity test filed. But what was a 13-year-old doing hanging out with college students? Did Karl really know her true age? Why now (25 years after the fact), as opposed to any time earlier... This may be some reasons why this is paying a paternity suit, rather than a court-decided matter. He made a mistake (apparently); what he is done in the community of Salt Lake and for the NBA are still great accomplishments. If the issue has been resolved with paying the suit, (and no legal COA is to follow), then why are we still "ooing" and "awing" all over it. It's past history.

Seriously- What's wrong with you? A 20-year old taking advantage of a 13-year old girl is a TERRIBLE thing (that's why they have laws against it, and why 400-or-so children were abducted by the government in Texas this month)! It's despicable of you to try to pin the fault on the little girl. And decent people who read this article will have to take a second look about seeing Karl Malone as any sort of hero or role model, which from a moral/ethical standpoint he clearly isn't. The article came out because Karl's son who he refuses to have contact with just got taken in the NFL draft last month. Again, which you would know if you had read it.

Again, I'm NOT trying to make excuses, but there are more things from the story than what we are being told. Yes, it's a terrible thing - I'm not discounting that. And do you think that ALL 400 children in the polygamous compound were victims of abuse? (doubtful). As I said, let the issue be resolved in a court of law before passing judgement.

And as terrible as this is, a person makes mistakes. Does that mean that he can't repent/change and be a good role model after that? Everybody should have the benefit of the doubt; everybody makes mistakes.

Come on MajorCougar, pull down your Mailman poster. I can pass judgement on this one without a court of law. I don't see why you're so adamant that Malone should not be judged on this one. Also, haven't his seed-sowing ways been documented many times before?

If you want to pass judgement on him without a Court of Law, that's fine; I'm not going to do it. I'm just saying that we should let a Court of Law confict AND sentence him - we as CBers should be careful about who we "pass judgement" on.

You know, Major, some people aren't as litigious as average society. Not everything gets "settled in court." It is probably okay for people to get on this medium and express their opinions and share healthy debate without having to go to court about it or rely on past court opinions for their personal opinions.

And for anyone to call that libel or slander is just ignorant.

Hello Mars, easy to see why this would be an emotional issue. It is very wrong for a 20 year old to have sex with a 13 year old, but it does happen, and it happens more in some areas than in others and I think we should take that into consideration before we pass final judgement on Malone, he did not come from a rich, well educated background. There are very few professional basketball players that I would want as a role model for my children. So if you are judging him by a moral role model than no, I say he fails, but if you are judging hime relative to other NBA basketball players; the names Kobe Bryant and Wilt Chamberlain come to mind than I would say he is okay. I also have trouble with the idea of criticizing him now for something that happened 20+ years ago. What about forgiving? He does seem to have changed. At least I don't know of any recent claims against him.

Let's put it this way. You have a daughter in the 7th grade. She just had sex with a college sophomore. Will you be okay with it in say 20 years since it happened so long ago? Of course a lot of her classmates (around 8% of them) were active so I guess that would make it more understandable.
And she was hanging out in a place where the college student was. And for goodness sake, she was 13 years old and could take care of herself. So it was her decision and there was nothing you could do about it anyway. She was going to do it eventually. Everybody was doing it, at least in the movies they were.

I don't know, I just can't seem to convince myself to accept any excuse or justification for it.

She was 13 he was 20. Ask me again in 8 years when my oldest girl is 13 and a 20 year old takes advantage of her and I end up on death row. Maybe I'll have "matured" more by then.

They didn't call him the mailman for nothing.

Don't let your daughter go to frat party's telling everyone she's a freshman.

Having sex with anyone before marriage is an abomination. In Vermont it is legal for a 20 year old to have sex with a 10 year old as long as they are married. Vermont should be chuck full of polygamists.

I have a 14 year old niece that can pass as 18. Her parents are very concerned with her double D's and flirty nature.

I'm surprised that Malone isn't manning up more to his responsibility to Bell. Bell seems like a guy who is hurting but too proud to let anyone know. Malone hiding behind his family statement at the end of the article sheds a lot of light on where he is emotionally,
I like the Jazz, and have been a fan for along time, I have to say I'm not a Malone fan any more. What he did for the team is one thing, what he's doing for his own flesh and blood is another, family always comes first, always.
As for the rape allegation, I'm unclear, although it sounds correct.
He must have been scared in college and didn't want his actions brought to light as an NBA career was on the horizion.

Man up Malone.
