What would BYU have to do this year to win the national championship? Most of you will say it is impossible - because of: (1) BYU's relative low preseason ranking (too many stairs to climb to get to the one or two spot), (2) BYU's mid-major conference status, (3) a weak schedule - no opponent (except Utah?!) ranked higher than BYU at the start of the season, (4) questions on the defensive side of the ball, (5) the BCS cartel - in the form of voters, sports writers, and coaches. Is there any way BYU, on its own record and statistics, could position itself to qualify for the 2008 national championship - regardless of what the other teams do this year? Most of you will say that the top teams in front of BYU must lose at least one game and preferrably in the second half of the season and BYU must have no loses and win convincingly on both sides of the ball. So, whithout help from the others. BYU can't do it. Is that it? No way BYU. Not this year. I wonder.

I'm not sure your asking the right question. All BYU can do is go undefeated, blowing out most every team. Other than that, there is NOTHING they can do. There would have to be a year like last year with upset after upset, where the top 5 is changing every week.

Last year, had BYU won the two games it lost, I think they could have made it to the top 5 with how crazy of a year that everyone else had. They probably wouldn't have made it to number 2, even though they would have had less of a climb than South Florida did, due to their BCS affiliation.

As was pointed out elsewhere, the BCS is the big boys' reaction to BYU winning the national championship. Given the money at stake, it's unlikely they will stand idly by and allow BYU, or any other outsider, to win one.

BYU for their part would have to go undefeated and probably blow everyone out. On the part of football, BYU would need every other BCS team except one, to lose a minimum of three games. All the teams ahead of BYU now in the polls would have to lose three games so they dropped below them. It would also help if UCLA or WA won the PAC-10, if MICH won the BIG Televen (and got beat badly by Utah), if TCU beating OK, etc. An aweful lot of if's.

Sounds like a monopoly to me. Maybe a case for congress.
