Wow did i open up a can of worms.
Rasta, you're a man of reason. well done.
To the fellow who said the PAC-10 wouldn't open up to BYU-Utah because of religion, you have no idea what you're talking about. It won't open up because of a number of reasons, being a small regligious school has nothing to do with it. Stop giving a bad rap to the decent folks of the LDS because of your insecurities and the perceived persecution you receive. I knew a number of LDS folk at school who had no issues with Stanford's secular nature and engaged in an open community that actually, in fact, embraced diversity of all kinds. It's a far cry from a place that dictates how long your mustache can be.
No one has ever denied that a BYU grad has ever received anything less than an excellent education.
The Med-school fellow: you don't see Stanford grads in po-dunk midwest communities because only 1600 of them graduate a year and they generally stick to the coasts or go overseas. You see lots of BYU students because of its proximity to many po-dunk midwest communities.
Getting back to the point, football. We won four games last year, jerk. Thanks for the quarterback.

According to the information on Wikipedia, BYU has around 34,000 students and Stanford has about 15,000. Small?

It think it odd you would describe BYU as a "small religlious [sic] school." Not only is it the largest religious university in the USA, it is the largest private university in the country and with a tuition that is one tenth what you rich boys pay. Stanford has a well deserved reputation for education excellence, to be sure, but I also think it odd you would tout its diversity as if you have something on BYU. BYU has students from 115 different countries. Stanford is represented by 50 countries. When I think of Stanford I also think of its religious intolerance--were you around for the mocking of sacred LDS temple rites by your band the last time we played you in CA? It was shamefully bigoted and displayed a distinct lack of tolerance, wouldn't you say? But congrats on your 4 victories last year. It was a step in the right direction.....

"Po-dunk midwest community" = the Mayo Clinic = world class medical institution.
Stanford grads can "stick to the coasts or go overseas" as much as they like. The simple observation is that this world class hospital is crawling with BYU grads. The educational quality at BYU is inexpensive and second to none.
Also, BYU is, year in and year out, a better football program than Stanford. Sorry I am just not buying that Stanford has anything on BYU.

I think being a religious school might be an excuse they use, along with "not a research university", but you're right, those aren't the real reasons. It's all about money. Does that make you feel better?

I hope you never come out here to Ann Arbor, MI and and tell people this is a po-dunk community. You might not like the reception you get. And according to USNews, we're tied with Stanford on best Medical schools... Maybe all of your grads staying on the west coast shows their insecurities about diversity.... (sorry, I had to add in the cheap shot, I just couldn't resist).

Now, I have to admit you must be a true fan, to brag about having four wins. It takes a true fan to stand up for something like that. But, I think the 2 wins was for predictions for this year...

First, unless you are the President of Stanford, I don't know that you can say with any authority that being a religious school has nothing to do with it. Do YOU really know what you're talking about?
Second, LDS students being accepted and not persecuted at Stanford (which is something I hope you wouldn't have to brag about, you want a cookie? )
is a very different thing than a major academic conference opening up it's doors and embracing ANY private religious school, but especially a Mormon religious school. You can talk about embracing diversity all you want but when you say things like " It's a far cry from a place that dictates how long your mustache can be" you show your true colors. People who consider themselves serious academic scholars, which Stanford obviously does, generally have some disdain for Religion and anything faith based that they don't see as scientific. Don't kid yourself or think that Stanford or any other PAC 10 school is above it, religion is not the only factor, but it definitely has SOMETHING to do with it.
