The attendance was most likely tied to the weather and the decision to make it only a scrimmage rather than a game. But, I was satisfied with the attendance.
First impression of the offense: A bit sluggish.
But, it wasn't the day to define the offense. They just weren't out there to impress anyone. They were out there to run some plays and do what they can to let guys learn their positions. I like that about it. It was the business of Ws and Ls, not PR work. They weren't selling tickets they were working on the team and it's issues.
They ran almost every play strong right unless two tight ends were in. The tight ends are great blockers and will be a huge strength for the team as expected.
The defense ran only one set the whole scrimmage.
About 50/50 run to pass ratio.
Jason Beck has a weak arm but his offense was able to drive on the defensive 2s. JaBeck kept hitting his man low although Andrew George got a huge TD catch off a low ball. It was well thrown at the pylon to keep out of reach of defenders but was far too low.
John Beck looked strong as a QB but like I said earlier, wasn't trying to prove anything. As a Senior he looks mature and was focused on feeding the ball to players rather than hyping up the crowd. Beck is going to be a great QB this year, and should health allow will be able to finally gain Ws with his stats.
The defense was very much improved like earlier posters said. Breaking on the ball and reaching to get the interception or block. Not quite a complete 180 from last year, but certainly a vast improvement. Jaime Hill was grabbing guys on the sideline and showing them where they screwed up after plays. I like Hill.
I heard a fan say, "The fifteen and cut-back pattern is going to be money this year." I completely agree.
Sigh...too many months until fall camp.
