Yesterday at the game I saw a lot of positives and a few negatives.

Positive
-Vakapuna is going to be BYU's finest back since Luke Staley. Although I'm wondering what he did for companionship study every morning? Gold's Gym maybe? Regardless this kid is a stud. I can hear it now gentlemen from the PA speakers, "That's another COUGAR first down."

-Linebackers rocked! My prediction, Chris Bolden #31 is going to start with Nixon, Jensen, and Stafferi. He's big, fast, and physical.

- I'm not sure why Tico Pringle #17 is on the third team? I felt that he was the best cover corner that we had out there. I think when all is said and done in the fall, HE WILL START.

I have to agree with you on your assessment. I too, have to worry about our D-Line. I was somewhat relieved after seeing good things from our linebackers.

Earlier, someone commented on Tico Pringle and how perhaps the ball was thrown in his direction because he wasn't doing a great job. I understand your idea, however I too, agree that he will start in the fall. Now let's face it people, did he not grab your attention with what he showed on Saturday? Honestly, his cornerback plays yesterday-speaking of his pass break-up and tackle were some of the biggest highlights that I took away from that scrimmage.

In fact, I can't remember the last time one of our corners broke up a pass like that! You may think I'm joking but I'm not. He's bigger and seems more instinctive in that position than any other secondary player I watched-this scrimmage and last season. I think the only reason we're hearing reports about him being 2nd and 3rd string is because Bronco and crew don't want to immediately take away the starting spot from the other guys.

Negative

- Receivers looked sloppy. The routes were rusty! I understand that Harline and many others were out. However we NEED to have some guys step up.

- Defensive line? Very questionable. I'm hopeful that the freshmen D-linemen coming in the summer will step it up. Although Jan Jorgenson has some raw talent. This is my gravest concern....

-Everyone needs to pray that John Beck doesn't get hurt this season. The backups we have are NOT talented in my opinion. I hope Max Hall is better then any of the guys I saw yesterday.

from QB23; As far as back up QBs go: The plays ran while they are in are a direct reflection of where they are in their development. Hanson and Mcuen each did two to three handoffs and two pass plays and looked horrible.

Actually, I think McEuen was 1 of 2 and completed a 17 yd (according to Darnell Dicksen) pass to Isaac Taylor that looked pretty crisp. I had heard he hadn't taken a snap in any of the spring scrimmages (until the blue/white game) and had only been in a couple of the 7 on 7's.

I think MJ will be a very good playmaking receiver and that he will also return at least one kick for a TD this season.
I have a question for the stat guru's. When was the last time a punt or kickoff was returned for a TD for BYU?

I'm going with Jermaine Dye (I think I said and spelled it right). I heard rumors that the slogan for opposing teams was..."you punt, you dye!" Am I right on this one? Let me know.

It was James Dye- and the signs always read- " You punt, you Dye". I can't remember anyone returning a kick for a TD since then, can anyone else? That is pretty sad if it's been that long.

I wasn't there so thank all of you for your reports. It sounds like the rbs are very strong and the receiving corps is not so good at this point. I would again hope that they have at least some plays with 2 to 3 of the rbs in and have one or two of them do man in motion plays. I think it will overload the defense.

I remember a few years ago that they would run plays till one of the little receivers would catch a ball in the middle of the secondary for 15 yds or so. In one or two plays it would happen again. You could sense a tearing. Soon one of them would be in the end zone. By then it would be a significant tear. Many times by half time the game would be mostly over and sophomores would get valuable training for the next year. I hope that can happen with the talent we now have.

It was actually Mike Rigell on October 17, 1998 vs. Hawaii. A cool 94 yard kick return.

Still been forever. Hope MJ can change that this year.
