You guys are like fishing for trout at a trout pond. Someone throws something out there and you are all over it. I get a kick out of that and a lot of you can't contain yourselves to explain to this guy as though he'd suddenly get educated and believe you all.

The best thing about the BYU-Arizona game last year was watching Stoops after the game. I swear, you'd think the guy just won the national championship. He was running around so geeked I thought he was going to wet himself. I don't even remember seeing half as much jubilation from Urban Meyer, Mack Brown, or Pete Caroll after any of the most recent BCS games.
I remember watching it and thinking, "wow, Arizona football must really be down if Stoops is ecstatic after beating a MWC team that finished 6-6 the previous year, by three, at home, on a botched field goal, in a season opener." That's the kind of win that defines a quality program. I can understand why Stoops was thrilled.
Anyways, as for this year, I think anyone who claims to know how the game is going to end up, really has no idea. My hunch is that the teams are fairly evenly matched. The win is going to go to whatever team is best able to shake the first game jitters and execute right from the opening kickoff. I don't think anyone has any way of knowing which team is going to be most ready to play.
That being said, if I had to speculate, I'll give the advantage to BYU, if for no other reason than they have the game in Provo--which historically has been a tough venue for visiting teams.
Also, one final note about your classy fans. My sister was at the game last year and from what she told me the Arizona fans were absolutely the most abrasive people she's encountered in a long time. It takes a lot of class for a 45 year old man to get up in the face of a 19 year old girl, after the game, and yell at the top of his lungs "F*@% your temple! F*@% Joseph Smith! And F*@% your Book of Mormon!" Real classy. At least your president had the decency to try to apologize on behalf of your 'fans.' Seeing as Mormons are the second largest religion in Arizona, you'd think that some of your fans would have realized that a good percentage of your fellow Wildcats are (gasp!) Mormons and really weren't amused by it all.

Great point, man, it's just so tough to ignore it. Someone on this board once told me, "When you argue with pigs, both of you get dirty but the pig enjoys it!" Here's to "self control." Say it with me.... "We can contain ourselves, we can contain ourselves, we can contain ourselves, we can contain ourselves.... OK, I'm done.... Thanx AF_Puma....

redarmycatscachecougThe last time BYU was of any significance was in 96, when you won the Holiday Bowl.
It was the Cotton Bowl.
When I went to find the year, I was looking up the Cotton Bowl to see when BYU went and was ranked in the top 10. I was also thinking about the Nebraska-Arizona Holiday Bowl, and accidentally stated the Holiday Bowl for BYU. But, I was talking recent history, not the long past, when you won a disputed championship. The bottom line is that BYU won the 1984 National Championship, although there is great debate about whether or not you deserved it. My own opinions aside, you are credited with winning it, end of that discussion. So, now that the initial shock and anger of having somebody call you out here has passed, will somebody please provide some detail as to just how BYU can beat Arizona? Who does BYU have that can neutralize Louis Holmes, who was National Junior College Player of the Year two years ago. What running back will play a majority of the snaps, and how would he have success against one of the better defense's in the nation? How will an untested quarterback with no college experience be able to beat an All-American corner? Can Hall throw with much success against what is generally regarded as a very good secondary? Go ahead and get as personal as you want, but some of you watch this team in practice every day, so give a reasonable response.
Okay, here you go.....my reasons...
1. Our Defense. The front 3 are effective, the 4 linebackers are FANTASTIC. The secondary is not bad although a mystery because of Criddle's health and whether or not one of our new, heralded corners can step in and play to their hype.
2. Our offensive line. Our OL is very big, very deep, and very good. Holmes and the rest of the Cats will have their hands full with them.
3. Our running backs. We lost Brown, but Tonga and Vakapuna are big, fast and are great pass-catchers. Incoming freshmen JJ DiLuigi is an x factor as he could contribute but it is too early to know.
4. Our tight ends. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better corp of tight ends in the country. They will be a big part of the offense which will occupy the Zona linebackers. George and Pitta are both 6'5" and present matchup problems. So'oto is shorter at 6'3" but he's very aggressive. These guys will make the Arizona D respect the middle of the field, allowing the running backs and receivers more breathing room.
5. Our special teams will be a toss-up. Our kicker is brand-new with no game experience. So I would expect him to struggle and see alot of pressure from Zona. Like last year, it could mean the difference in the outcome but I don't think that it will.
I respect Arizona's D but I'm not convinced they can shut down the Cougars. And our defense is very, very good and your offense will have a hard time scoring. It will be a defensive battle. Final score....BYU 24 ZONA 14.

Tyler, you and I have had differences before, but I fully agree with your post here.
I was at the game, and saw it on TV afterwards, how Stoops was beside himself.
And, yes, this is going to be an evenly-matched, defensive struggle. The odds-makers will probably give a 1-3 point advantage to BYU, just because it is in Provo.
And, yes, I heard the vitriole of the AZ fans - it was embarrassing, especially, when they did a special recognition for the Church's 50th anniversary for Institute down there...
