dalestephensonI don't ever expect us to be in the PAC-10, but the clear benefit of being in the Pac-10 is recruiting. A stronger conference would make us more attractive to member and non-member alike. Pac-10 teams are our chief recruiting rivals, and the main draw (especially for LDS kids) is the conference, not the school. Think we lose Ngata to Oregon if we're both in the Pac-10?
Here's a list of players we offered (according to scout.com), that went to Pac-10 schools. I think a Pac-10 BYU gets some of these kids.

FWIW, I doubt Olson transfers if we were Pac-10.
Of course, there's a vested reason for the Pac-10 not to invite us, as if they needed one. They get some very good production out of west coast Mormons, and it'd be difficult to keep that talent flowing into their programs.
I think you are right to a degree. I think if BYU joins the Pac-10 they have an easier time recruiting the best LDS athletes, but I don't think it would be a recruiting boon of non-LDS athletes. BYU would still have an honor code, still be a fairly undiverse campus, in a fairly undiverse city, and continue to remain America's stone cold sober university.
So, I think BYU would be deep in areas they recruit well if they joined the Pac-10: OL, DT, MLB, QB, TE. But they would still struggle landing top flight DE, OLB, DB, RB, and WR to compete consistently at a national level where depth at those positions is imperative.
