I think Anae is great at creating offenses. However his play calling is suspect and not flexible enough. He has a game plan when he goes into the game and it takes him way to long to adjust (if he does at all) and if he does he goes right back to the game plan.

I did not get to see the Tulsa game however after reading what people have posted here I think he is running into the same problem he did with UCLA. Let me expand by recapping the UCLA loss.

1st Quarter BYU play calling.
Unsuccessful run
Unsuccessful run
Mildly Successful run.
Unseccessful run
Unsuccessful run
Unsuccessful run
short pass for three yards.

Result nada

2nd quarter play calling
Unsuccessful run
Unsuccessful run
Mildly Successful run.
Unseccessful run
Unsuccessful run
Unsuccessful run
short pass for three yards.

Result 3 points

3rd Quarter
Mid length pass
Mid length pass
Mid length pass
Decent Run
Decent Run
Long pass
Mid length pass
Short pass

Result 14 points

4th Quarter now that the game is ours to win.
Unsuccessful run
Unsuccessful run
Mildly Successful run.
Unseccessful run
Unsuccessful run
Unsuccessful run
short pass for three yards.

Sure Refs made bad calls there were bad penalties but play calling was not quite there.

After BYU man handled their DB's they went right back to what didn't work when UCLA did not prove they could stop the Pass. Case in point Utah picked up where BYU left off in the third quarter and with a much less talented team. UCLA not once proved they could stop the air attack. Utah exploited that Anae didn't.

If Tulsa did not prove they could stop the run and BYU was ahead, their was no excuse to pass, Period! When BYU is ahead what is the difference between a scoring drive centered around the run and a scoring drive centered around a pass? About 5 minutes off the clock and five less minutes the other team has to score on your lethargic defense.

I am sorry MR. Anae but in the case of UCLA game you don't have to run to open up the pass, if the pass is already open. If they can't stop you running you don't have to pass either.

Anae is a great offensive mind but last week it was poor play calling and from what I can gather it wasn't bad this week but could have been much better.

Since I have mentioned UCLA in this post please don't call Ben Olson a traitor, that dude sucks, he did BYU a favor by going somewhere else.

I didn't realize that we only ran 30 offensive plays against UCLA

You get the point. Playing the short game and run game against UCLA didn't work for two quarters. He switches to a pass heavy game throws up 14 points and then switches back to something that didn't work, when UCLA did nothing to stop the pass. As much as it pains me to say this Ludwig realized this to the tune of 44-6. Had Anae not switched back to the "game plan" in the fourth quarter I think the game would have gone the other way.

Alot of you guys are thinking that I am just hating on Anae, I am not, I think that he has done a very good job so far. The point I am trying to make is; a good coach will adjust to game situations on the fly. Anae did not do this last night. It was obvious to everyone that Tulsa could not stop our running game. We stopped it a couple of times with stupid holding calls but our guys were picking up good yards on every carry. The second thing that was obvious is that our defense had NO chance of stopping their offense. With these two pieces of information coming out of the half with a 3 point lead it seems obvious that the best plan of attack is to run the ball, take 10 minutes off of the clock, and score a touchdown which (if by some miracle our kicker hits the PAT) would put us up by 10 pts. If BYU's defense gets another stop, (Which they did on the drive resulting from our second interception holding them to a field goal) then BYU has an opportunity to once again run the ball, eat up another 10 minutes and score again.

Soooo, if you think that this would result in a 10 point loss for the cougars, it wouldn't. Running the ball demoralizes a team with an offense like Tulsa's; they were scoring in less then a minute. If BYU comes out in the 3rd quarter and tacks on another touchdown to their 3 point lead and there is only 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Tulsa is now behind the 8 ball. Instead the reality of what happened is, BYU tries to throw the ball, throws a pick 6 and the game was basicly over at that point.

This is exactly right. I said as the 2nd half starts that we need to grind it out and put ourselves up 10 points. Someone in this thread asked how many times the plays are changed by the QB? Good question but it is immaterial. Anae should have made sure that he and Hall were on the same page to start the half so that the pick 6 didn't happen and we go up by 10 after we run the ball.

What a game!

Tulsa found our weekness - SAFETY - the remarkable thing is their QB made some great throws and their receivers made some great catches - they would have lost witout those plays. The bad thing is we missed some assignments and they exploited it.

They had 15 days to prepare and since they had an easy 1st game they probably were even preparing for us before that. Our defensive backs are well coached in the system but still lack overall complete natural talent (let's say OU Sooner talent). Our front seven are good/great - Tulsa felt that they had to go over the top and made it work. If we could bump and run cover OR get a great pass rush without the blitz we could have neutralized them - Bronco is simply using what has been working to date.

It is apparent we got outcoached. Tulsa on offense would call in plays to the field from what the booth was seeing on the field. As time goes by, we should wise up and start disguising coverages and start baiting teams in to bad plays when they use these type of reads. The problem was that this was the first time Bronco faced this guy - he was at Rice last year.
Crowton did this to our league the first time they saw us - the next year they had all wized up.

I have a few questions??
---Why didn't we run at them more?
---Why are we still throwing the slant?
---What happened to the trap draw?
---Can we roll out some of the time?
---Can we try a razzle-dazzle at least once a game?
---Last time I looked Micheal Read is still open?
---Can the Wide receivers go a game without getting a personal foul?
---Can anyone tackle Unga on a first hit?
---Do something to slow down the oppenents from blitzing.
---Some quick hitting run plays would be effective - we were doing that at the end of the season last year with Brown.
---Screen passes slow down blitz happy teams - it would be a thing of beauty with Unga (and DiLuigi next year).
---Can we do miss direction?
---What happened to the Wide receiver screen? (I do not like it much - but with Collie and Reid it could be beautiful.)

Thank goodness this was not a conference game? We weren't going to a BCS game anyway - still hurts though.

We are going to get everybody's best game - including the refs --- BE READY.

Who is on the headset with Anae and what do they tell him? Isn't the guy up there supposed to be Anae's eyes as far as overall attacking goes?

(this is a real question, not a hate statement with a question mark attached )

Holy #%$^$ are you guys freeking nuts you want to blame Anea for this loss. Our offense was the only good part of the game for us. You say run the ball more well incase you havent noticed in 3 years this is a pass first offense always has and always will be. This isnt even a fair arguement maybe we should send him down the road and let one of you call the plays. This whole website if full of whining arm chair coaches. It makes me want to puke. We lost to a team that really suprised everyone with the talent they have any time a team can score 55 points its not just a fluke.
