Coaches have been icing kickers for years, but its been the development this year of calling the timeout so late that the play already starts that warrents the unsportsmanlike conduct
Are you certain? Maybe someone can remind my rememberer, but I think a TCU kicker had to kick a field goal twice. I thought it was because a timeout by Bronco called late. I remember fans laughing and after he made it again some giving a standing-o (while laughing).
You are spot on. Bronco called timeout just before the snap and made the kicker kick it twice just before half time. In fact, IIRC, they showed a replay of Bronco waiting until the last second to time the timeout just right. I distinctly remember this event because not more than just a few weeks earlier some on this board were making fun of Urban Meyer for doing the same thing against Auburn and made claims that Bronco wouldn't do such a thing. To me, its just part of the game. So, I was grinning from ear to ear when Bronco followed suit a few weeks later. Of course, I have way too much class to get on here and say I told you so.
Screw it, it's a sports forum, not Elder's Quorum. Told you so. Told you so.
Oh, I agree with Scott715. I think this practice will continue until some coach suffers the unfortunate event of the kicker missing the first field goal attempt and making the second (or calling time out when you would have stuffed Brady on fourth down and sealed the victory--ouch, that still has to hurt Baltimore).
