Here are my two or three cents,
1. This is really scary to me, WE DONT HAVE ONE QB THAT IS BETTER THAN A GUY WHO LAST PLAYED QB WHEN HE WAS 10!!!
What does this say about our recruiting of McQuen and Gaskin, I mean, really, Collie. I will try not to read into this too much but it seems that that Bronco really does not trust the back-ups
2. How would you feel if you were Gaskin, I wonder what he is thinking right now. "humm, dear diary, today I found out that our #1 wide receiver who hasn't played QB since he was 10 is getting reps to replace me in case Hall goes down. I wonder if I should go back to Div.II"
3. It is just hard from me to believe that after a year and a half in the system they still don't fully trust Gaskin. I thought he was supposed to be really really good. What has happened?
Again, I will try not to read into this too much but it is hard not to when it has become so public that Bronco doesn't trust the backups.
Please, Hall do not get hurt! Just some clarification for you...and not to be disrespectful towards you(I enjoy your posts).
1-I thought that it was said of Collie it was in grade 10 or 10th grade...not the age of 10.
Also no need to question BYU's recruiting of McEuen...he was not recruited but walked on...as to BYU's other recruits at QB quite a few of them left the team last year. A lot of them saw the writing on the wall and didn't want to play second fiddle to Max Hall. They have consequently transfered to other schoools. I will say more QB's have left than what I expected thus leaving us in the 2 deep problem at QB we currently have. More quality QB recruits will be coming in over the next 2 years.
2-We do not see everything going on or the context of what is going on so to draw certain conclusions of what Gaskins is thinking is pure speculation. With the same reckless abandon I will also say that if Hall does go down, Gaskins will be in there as back up...Collie will not be taking the majority of snaps under center...I really think much is being made out of nothing.
3- Should have already been answered by one and two. If you really think that Collie is getting a nod above Gaskins or others(Covey) then you really are reading more into what is really not there.

If they really intend to use Collie as quarterback I take it as good and bad news.
1. Good news because if they really think he can be the quarterback then they really must be feeling good about the progress of his leg.
2. Bad news because of all that was said in the quoted posts above. If BYUs best option for back up qb is their best wide receiver, even though the back ups have had a year or longer to practice and digest the play book, then good greif Northen Iowa should just take them home with them.
Having said all of that I really feel that this was a way for Doman and Bronco to motivate Gaskins and McQuen. The head to head competition between the two has lost its luster and urgency. I think that even though Gaskins and McQuen are trying their hardest they have gotten a little complacent and need a little kick in the pants. I think Bronco has done the same this year with Fui and Ian Dulan. He said publicly, "Yeah Fui is in danger of losing his starting position because he hasnt put in the effort I feel was needed to come back from his hamstring injury." He said roughly the same thing about Denny taking Ian Dulan's starting position because he wasnt happy with Ian's recovery from a shoulder injury. Oh and guess what, it worked! As soon as Fui heard the comments 2 days later he was in practice doing well. Bronco made those comments about Ian on Wednesday and Ian was in practice today! So just think about Gaskins and McQuen today at practice watching the receiver that wasnt even supposed to be on his feet this whole month competing for their job. That would light a fire under me and tell me "Hey I suck, and I need to step it up if I want my team to take me seriously!" Collie was the obvious guy to use in the situation because he could legitimatly play quarterback and because he is still tending to his leg injury so Bronocs little experiement wouldnt eat into his practice and prep time. Sure I think Collie could come in once or twice this year as an added wrinkle but if (knock on wood) Hall goes down we will see mostly Gaskins, McQuen, or Covey.

Actually, if you listen to the Collie interview, he states clearly that he hasn't played quarterback since he was 10 years old, not the 10th grade. I don't get this decision at all, to be frank, but I trust the coaches. They know a heck of a lot more about football than I ever will. It scares me to death, however, that our backups are so poor that they even consider playing Collie at QB to be an improvement. Wow, I hope Hall stays healthy.

If (and only if) by "every year" you mean "half of one year", then you're correct.

Let's not all panic right away. If for some reason Hall couldn't go this Saturday, Gaskins would be the starter at QB. Covey and Collie would be available as change-of-pace QB's, but that's it. I'm pretty sure that would hold true all season long.

Covey and Collie might be used as situational QBs. They are not being added as preferred back ups. Gaskins is #2 and McEuen is #3 on the depth chart.
In Bronco I trust.
