I truly hate the BCS but I disagree with this statement: "The whole reason that the BCS was made is so that a mid-major can not win the NC as BYU did in 1984."
The BCS was formed in a flawed attempt to ensure a consensus national champion. There are obviously the perceived haves (BCS conferences) and have nots (everyone else), but I don't view it as a conspiracy but rather the result of: (1) greed, and (2) an accurate recognition that almost all of the of national championships in the modern era have come from teams in the (now) BCS conferences. The system will continue to be tweaked (e.g., a MWC v. WAC play-in BCS game, and/or + 1, and/or playoff), and continuing to buck against the system will create needed change and improvement.
Nevetheless, I still believe that BYU can play for the BCS title THIS YEAR, if the conditions stated in my earlier post occur. Last year, Hawaii started 23 in the pre-season AP poll and moved up to 10 in the final pre-bowl AP poll. In 2006, Boise State started 30 in the pre-season AP poll and moved up to 9 in the final pre-bowl AP poll. In 2004, Utah started 20 in the pre-season AP poll and moved up to 5 in the final pre-bowl AP poll (with 3 other undefeated teams above them). I do acknowledge, however, that the BCS poll, and not the AP poll, determines who plays for the NC, but I stand by my position.
BYU begins the season ranked 16 in the AP poll. Moreover, although I hate this term, BYU is a "BCS darling" this year, and I can't recall BYU getting this much pre-season love and attention ever. Just look at the in depth spread on Max Hall in the NY Times this past weekend for crying out loud. We are primed for a very special year, and as they say, I'm all in.
Go Cougs!
