Getting walked is, well, boring.
When Kasey Ko finally got a pitch to hit, he knew what to do.
Driving in the go-ahead run is much more fun.
Ko singled in what proved to be the game-winning run in BYU's key five-run seventh inning to help BYU beat Air Force 10-5, and complete a three-game sweep over the Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Miller Field.
Ko, who is second on the team in walks with 20, was given a free pass on two previous at-bats before he stepped to the plate in the seventh inning with Kent Walton on second. Ko stroked a sharp single through the left side of the infield to drive in Walton and put BYU up 6-5.
"Sometimes you'd like to have your No. 5 hitter be a little more aggressive, but I actually thought he swung at ball four. It was a little high and out of the strike zone, but he hit into left field," said BYU coach Vance Law. "I always like to regain the lead. It really pumps me up. There's something about having the lead. I like to go into the ninth inning and giving the game to your bullpen."
Since Air Force had rallied from four runs down to take the lead before BYU had tied the score at 5-all, the Cougars were taking no chances. BYU continued to score until relief pitcher Blake Torgerson exhaled.
The Cougars tacked on four more runs after Ko's RBI single to put the game out of reach. J.T. Musso hit a sacrifice fly and Andrew Law followed with an RBI single. Sean McNaughton singled in two more runs, which allowed Torgerson, who gave up just one hit in three innings of work, to pick up the win.
BYU looked to be on its way to an easy win when the Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead after five innings.
Musso doubled in a pair of runs in the fourth. Then Brandon Relf led off the bottom of the fifth with an inside-the-park home run. He drove a ball deep down the left-field line. Air Force outfielder Daniel Walker dove into the wall, but couldn't make the catch. Walker was down for the count. While the ball laid by Walker's head, Relf circled the bases and scored without a throw. Walker eventually got up and stayed in the game.
After making quick work of Air Force through the first five innings, BYU starter Sean Amerson got into trouble in the fifth when Josh Meents led off the inning with a double. He scored when Relf scooped up a ground ball at shortstop and threw wide of first base, allowing the run to score and David Miller to take second. Nathan Carter drew a walk and Amerson hit K.J. Randhawa to load the bases.
Chay Derbigny knocked Amerson out of the game with a two-run single up the middle to cut the lead to 4-3.
BYU called on Torgerson to put out the fire, but he found a hot spot in the Air Force lineup. Matt Alexander ripped a two-run double just over the outstretched glove of Jonathan Cluff in right field that gave Air Force a 5-4 lead.
"Obviously I wasn't trying to give up a two-run double, but after I gave up the hit, there was nothing I could do about it," Torgerson said. "I had to focus and give our guys a chance to come back and make some plays."
BYU tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth when Bryce Ayoso walked and stole second. Musso laid down a bunt so good he beat it out and McNaughton hit a sacrifice fly to left to set the stage for BYU's big seventh inning.
BYU is now 12-10 overall and 3-3 in Mountain West Conference play.
"I think this has definitely built our confidence, especially at home," Torgerson said. "We've now won five in a row at our park. We feel like we can compete with anyone."
Next up for the Cougars is a two-game series against Oregon State, the two-time defending national champions.
Law said he plans on throwing Nelson Castleberry in Monday's game, a 3 p.m. start, and Jake Wortham in Game 2 of the series, which is scheduled for 1 p.m.
"Hopefully the fans will come out and support us," Law said. "It's not very often that you can a chance to play a two-time defending national champion or even a Pac-10 school. We have a hard time getting them to come out here and playing us. I don't anticipate our guys being intimidated. We feel like we can play with anybody."
